Direct methods are applied in conjunction with the adaptive bisection epsilon-constraint scalarization method, and a generic A320 airliner model, to generate pareto frontiers for climb trajectories optimized for minimum time and fuel.

The adaptive bisection e-constraint method is adapted to enable the solution of problems in which two performance indices are to be minimized simultaneously leading to the generation of Pareto frontiers. The techniques are applied to an aircraft trajectory optimisation problem in which a generic model of an Airbus A320 model aircraft is used. The problem involves the generation of a Pareto set of solutions which find a compromise between flight time and fuel consumption for a climb from 35 ft to a cruising level of 35,000 ft in a range of 900 km. The results are then analysed in-depth and corroborated with flight performance theory.

In addition, a standard arrival, one from the north from where the large majority of aircraft approach Malta, linking to runway 31 is proposed. The design, following ICAO recommendations, is described in detail. Current practice of aircraft inbound from the same entry point, observed using ADS-B recorded data, is also presented in a discussion leading to the identification of gains that could result from flying the proposed arrival and approach routes optimally.

In this respect, Clean Sky, which is a €1.6 billion Joint Technology Initiative part funded by the European Commission is the largest ever programme addressing the greening of air transportation in response to the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) goals of reducing CO2 and perceived noise emissions by 50% and NOx by 80% by 2020 compared to 2000 condition. This paper presents research work carried out within the Systems for Green Operations Integrated Technology Demonstrator (ITD) of Clean Sky that is associated with GATAC, a trajectory and route planning tool to enable the multi-objective optimization of flight trajectories and missions. The design and operational methodology of the tool, the optimization algorithms and models are discussed and the results of a preliminary application for a long-range commercial flight are presented.

Operational scenarios are included for both climb and descent phases. The paper also includes a description of the tests used to assess the Con-Ops and the ATC tool. Finally, an overview of the safety assessment procedure to be carried out for the Con-Ops is provided.
