MediaWiki message delivery (talkcontribs)

Dear Ydedzakawehq137q :)

Wikidata's Twelfth birthday datathon

I'm excited to announce that Wikidata:WikiProject India and various communities across India are planning to celebrate Wikidata's 12th birthday with a special Wikidata Data-thon during the months of October-November 2024. This campaign will focus on improving the quality of content on Wikidata, with a special emphasis on India-related properties and items. Additionally this data-thon also aims to enhance Wikidata items by improving labels and descriptions in the native language, along with the addition of references, qualifiers, and statements contributing to the improvement of structured data in Wikidata.

As part of this celebration, I would like to invite all interested community members and User Groups to join us in this collaborative effort to celebrate this milestone by making Wikidata even better. Please have a look at the event page.

How to Participate:

  • Sign up as a participant: If you want to contribute to the data-thon by editing and improving India-related content on Wikidata, please add your name to the participants list here.
  • Organize a Data-thon: If you're part of a User Group or community that would like to take the lead in organizing the event, please sign up here to help organize the activities.

If you have any questions or need further information or want to share any ideas and feedback, feel free to reach out on the talk page of Wikiproject India or contact me.

You are receiving this message as you are one of the active participants of WikiProject India on Wikidata. If you do not want to receive this kind of notification further, you can remove your username from here.

What exactly was wrong with my edits to Q2085381 that warranted them being reverted? A lot of the stuff I removed or changed was totally nonsensical and pointless.

Bodhisattwa (talkcontribs)

Hello @Adamant1:, you have changed publishing company (Q2085381) radically without any explanation creating a lot of constraints in several items related to publishers and that is why I had to revert it. Since, you have reverted my edit again, I will not revert your edit and engage in edit war. I guess, its better for the admins to decide. I am pinging @Mahir256: to have a look. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 07:49, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Adamant1 (talkcontribs)

If you disagreed that any particular thing shouldn't have been removed or otherwise changed the appropriate thing to do would have to add back the individual things that you think should still be included. A lot of the items are clearly nonsense though. For instance "different from editor-in-chief." No one confuses a publisher company for the editor-in-chief of one. It's tangential, but I'm really not a fan of how you went and cried to an administrator the second I messaged you about it instead of discussing it with me first. We're both adults who can resolve our own issues without crying to an admin at the slightest disagreement like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum. We're both adults here and this isn't grade school were the default is to whine to a teacher to get our way about something the second there's a disagreement.

Bodhisattwa (talkcontribs)

@Adamant1:, Personally, I do not engage with any editor, when there is a slightest chance of edit war and leave matter to others who regularly deal with them. This is because I have found it several times in my fair share in Wikimedia that such engagements can be very time consuming and energy draining, which I do not have much to afford nowadays, frankly. I also understand that you might have a different way of viewing things. Anyway, I like the way, you tried to portray me as a whining and spoiled child throwing a tantrum to a teacher in a second grade school, that was hilarious and I had a good laugh.

Adamant1 (talkcontribs)

I don't think I regularly or otherwise deal with Mahir256. So I'm not really sure what your talking about there. Same goes for edit waring thing. I took the time to message you about it and have said that I don't care if you re-add specific items to the entry that you think shouldn't have been removed. So there is no edit war here. I'm simply trying to figure out what the best option for the entry is here. I'm sorry if you find that time consuming and draining, but communicating with other users about issues is pretty a basic requirement on projects like this. And as to the last part of your comment, that's how it comes off when a user immediately pings an administrator who they are clearly friendly with to play defense for them instead of at least attempting to resolve the issue themselves first.

I have no problem with Mahir256 giving their opinion, but pinging them shouldn't have been the thing you did the second I left the message. That's not what administrator's exist for and it doesn't help that you did the same exact thing a few years ago when we had the disagreement about bank branches in India. So it's pretty clear you have zero ability to resolve disagreements on your own without crying to an admin and having them intervene on your behalf. Again, like a child running to a teacher in grade school. It's find if you find that funny, but personally I don't. It's just needlessly confrontational, corrupt, and against the collaborative nature of this. I don't think it's good or appropriate to laugh off core principles of the project like that either. It just makes it seems like you don't take this or working with users to improve the project seriously. I do though.

In most situations, linkages were first set up manually on each work in each Wikisource. Those were transferred to Wikidata, and removed from the Wikisource pages. Deleting those links here removes all that work and breaks the linkages between works and Wikisource pages. Yes, they should be moved to their own data items, but that won't happen if the links are instead removed without correcting them.

poetry (Q482) is a literary style; not a literary form.

EncycloPetey (talkcontribs)

poetry (Q482) is a literary style, not a literary form. That is, any portion of writing can be described by this description, such as a page from within a larger work. The work as a whole is what has a form, and the form is describes as being a poem (Q5185279). "Form" of a work is the word that applies to the complete work. --EncycloPetey (talk) 16:29, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Bodhisattwa (talkcontribs)

@EncycloPetey:, Ok, makes sense. But then, poetry (Q482) needs to be corrected as it shows the statement instance of (P31): literary form (Q4263830) and the English Wikipedia says that too. Frankly, the way, all the literary forms and genres, interchangeably used on Wikimedia sites are fairly confusing and needs attention to fix.

EncycloPetey (talkcontribs)

Wikipedia is not using the same precision of language as Wiktionary or Wikidata. And "literary form" is not the same as "form of a creative work". It's only relatively recently that the net of conflicting labels in this area has started to be teased apart, and there is probably a lot remaining to be done. In this situation poetry (Q482) is probably listed as a literary form (Q4263830) because there is nothing else suitable for it to be listed under. I've been in this discussion with someone else, and we could not find language anywhere in Wikidata suitable for expressing the idea of poetry (Q482) as a literary constructive style. It's opposite is prose (Q676).

Bodhisattwa (talkcontribs)

@EncycloPetey:, agreed, but we need to centralize a list of literary styles, forms and genres, that will be visible for all, may be somewhere at WD:Books. Otherwise, there will be a high chance of repeated errors and edit conflicts. I will stop adding the forms and genres until that is done. It would be great if you take the initiative. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 17:18, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Contributing to OpenStreetMap and WikiProject West Bengal

NLBRT (talkcontribs)

Hi, Mr. Bodhisattwa! I'm Nilabrata (alias NLBRT) from West Bengal. I am an Active Contributor on OpenStreetMap and came to learn about the Wikidata Project Happening in West Bengal at the recently organised IndiaFOSS 3.0, courtesy of Mr. Ranjith from Wikidata Kerala.

I am really interested in learning how to add stuff on Wikidata, which I reckon is also a powerful way to link similar things (like Brands with similar stores/outlets, PSUs, Bank ATMs/Branches) to OSM Data very quickly.

You may contact me via Telegram (@Nilabrata), Matrix (@nlbrt:matrix.org) or XMPP (nlbrt@jabbers.one). Thank you.

Bodhisattwa (talkcontribs)

Hi Nilabrata! Nice to meet you. I have sent a welcome message to your talk page, where you can find all the relevant basic links about editing Wikidata. I hope, that would help you in working on this database. I will try to help you as best as I can, if you need. Its always nice to have a fellow OSM contributor within us and as you are from West Bengal, we are even more lucky to have you. Hope we will meet in person some day and have a conversation.

NLBRT (talkcontribs)

First things first, thanks a lot for offering the resources, I'll certainly check them out and start contributing accordingly!

Second, yes, I am from West Bengal, but I live far up in the North (i.e, Jalpaiguri (View on OSM)). However, I reckon the distance won't ruin the chances for a meetup! :D

Noted. It was a mistake to remove the English and Spanish sitelinks. Apologies for that. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 05:58, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
