Human rights advocacy can be a powerful opportunity for prisoners to put the injustices before the public, a useful supplement to litigation, and a low cost alternative tool to highlight and address continuing violations of prisoners’ rights. This paper will provide an overview of basic human rights, discuss the various human rights that are afforded to prisoners, examine the workings of the U.N. Human Rights Advocacy, and conclude with a discussion of prisoner advocacy under the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

This article tells the stories of social justice advocates, some lawyers, some advocates, and some people who were students when Hurricane Katrina hit and who later went on to become lawyers. Though the stories stand on their own, their wisdom is distilled into thirteen lessons in the hope that these experiences might guide others facing similar disasters.
