homogeneous process. Although resulting from the need to specify the different spheres of
European influence in the region and ensure the effective occupation of the areas historically
attributed to Europeans, each border section was discussed separately and had its own
process, which cannot be considered as automatically resulting from the Berlin Conference
(1885).
Using the documents produced by the Commission of Borders Delimitation involved in the
border definition between the former district of Lourenço Marques and the Maputaland
(AmaThongaland), this article discusses how this process was implemented and its resulting
impacts, particularly the division of the AmaThonga territories, in 1887, as this decision
meant that the territories north of the river Maputo stayed under Portuguese sovereignty,
while those south of the river would be, from then on, under British rule.

in Sofala, Mozambique, in the 16th century. Using the documental archive sources on the
Sofala coast we highlight the specificity of the interaction between the Portuguese and the
local communities, the importance of the “non-official” strategies used by the Portuguese
in order to be accepted by the local chieftaincies, the impact of their integration into the
local and regional networks and how their attitude formed new geographies of power in
the area, while exposing political, economic, social, cultural and religious dichotomies.
Focusing our attention on these aspects we make new contributions to the analysis of
the Sofala region in the 16th century for a better understanding of its role in the African
and Indian Ocean trading networks in the Portuguese empire, mostly based in informal
economic and political control and thus pretty close to the concept of "shadow empire".

The example of the establishment of the Portuguese in Sofala (Mozambique) and the documentation produced in the context of the expansion and building of the Portuguese Empire, will be used to trace the historical and geographical framework of Sofala coast, considering both the geo-climatic conditions of the region and the environmental changes occurring in it between the XVI-XVIII, as the results of the Portuguese presence, particularly related to the exploitation of local resources and landscape changes. From the historical point of view this approach will allow a better understanding of the reasons for the Sofala abandonment in the context of the Portuguese presence in the south-eastern African coast while, from the point of view of environmental history, makes possible the perception of the major environmental changes processes which were then witnessed by the Portuguese, as well as the results of their presence in Sofala. Both having significant short, medium and long term impacts. By privileging an analysis that considers the relationship of these aspects it will become possible to better contextualize and understand the changes that this area has been subject over the centuries and whose consequences are still felt today.

The objective of this article is to highlight that these reports constitute a privileged source not only for the study of the process of cementing Portuguese colonial rule in Mozambique, but also for the study of tropical medicine from a perspective that takes into account the specific conditions of the region, and which provides historical information on the analysis of the problems related to disease and cure.

Operating throughout the Indian Ocean and in articulation with the inland African trade routes by way of the coastal settlements from Bazaruto up to the north of Mozambique, this network bustled luxury goods and basic goods benefiting either from a network of inter-personal relationships and kinship that supported the whole business, or from an ancestral knowledge on the techniques and particular procedures indispensable to navigating in the Indian Ocean. This trade made the prosperity of small southern ports, like Sofala or Mozambique long before the Portuguese arrival. However, this trade was so much dependent on the network's capacity of organisation and the supply demand relation of the goods involved, as well as on other factors such as the political stability of the African kingdoms, the environmental changes that shaped flows and trade routes or the actual knowledge of the region and of the different forms of organization of local communities. By focusing in the ports of Sofala and Mozambique and the information provided by the Portuguese documents we intend to analyse its evolution during the 16th century in order to understand its role in the Indian Ocean commercial network under Portuguese rule.

Due to natural causes or to political issues, in some areas the former delimitation of the physical border has disappeared. Old beacons are missing and negotiations must be done in order to rebuild the border line accordingly to the former treaties and agreements of the early 20th century between the governments of Mozambique and of the adjoining countries of Swaziland and South Africa.
Whatever might be the conditions, the “remaking” of the history of a country is definitely not easy and in this specific case, when the borders were defined by a colonial power strange to the local interests, this task become even more difficult to attempt as most of the documents supporting the decisions responsible for the actual country shape are kept outside the country, in the national Archives of the former colonial powers.
In Portugal, most of these documents are in the Tropical Research Institute, more specifically in the Portuguese Overseas Archive (AHU) and, unfortunately, not all of them are available for research and study .
One of the most relevant nucleus of documents concerning this subject is the so-called Archives of the Frontiers, concerning the specific work of the Portuguese Commission of Cartography on this subject all over the territories under the Portuguese sovereignty during the last century.
Making use of the different types of documents of these Archives – maps, reports, photos… - we will try to emphasize either their importance for the “rebuilding” of the History of South Mozambique or their specific contribution for enlightening of some present day situations.
