Abstract
Effective information management is considered an important tool for good management and decision-making in health programs. This chapter introduces the basic concepts in Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) and discusses its role in decision-making. Since the health systems have a complex structure and includes several components related to health services management, HMIS also covers various related components, processes, and subsystems. Its data sources include routine reporting system, epidemiological surveillance, specific program monitoring report, administrative data, evaluations and research studies, and periodic health surveys. Computer technology, including hardware, software, networking, and data management systems play an important role in the design of HMIS. The strategies, techniques, and tools for developing HMIS systems have evolved over time. This chapter describes the key strategies and processes for developing information system and the challenges in its implementation at the organizational level. Emphasizing on the importance of data quality, it also discusses the key barriers and facilitators to the use of information for decision-making.
