Abstract
India is affluent with solar energy which is being effectively utilized by using appropriate technology to generate energy. From the perspective of sustaining energy, it is the most reliable technology since it is abundant and renewable. India has set a big target in the development of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology particularly in the southern and western regions of the country as average solar radiation in these parts is much higher than the other regions. Currently, India keeps close attention towards the floating PV technology as there are many large water bodies which could be potentially utilized for large-scale power generation. The present study illustrates an overview of the floating photovoltaic (FPV) technologies. It presents global scenario of floating solar plants and shows their capacities and developments. The study depicts current Indian scenario of the floating solar plant and the projects which are under developing condition. Technical and economical barriers as well as various challenges in the implementation of the technology have been presented in this study. The study also evaluates future prospects of FPV plant by utilizing large water bodies such as reservoirs, lakes and dams. It also evaluates that India has a potential to develop 38.88 GW capacity by using 35 large water bodies.
