robert redford: oh yes it is. that's exactly what it is. and it's no kid's game either. this is a whole other game. and it's serious and it's dangerous and it's not one you wanna lose.

Refreshing in its pragmatism about espionage as opposed to the usual moral handwringing, and without being heartless. It also doesn't try to be timely, freeing the story up to be a melodrama with an especially tantalizing and complicated historical backdrop. In a lot of ways this feels like the other Scott brother's movie. It's telling that when Ridley eventually lifted it you got the largely identical but way more self-satisfied & trite BODY OF LIES.
Dinner Out is a go.

Helicopter shots, satellite feeds, surveillance cameras, news coverage, all compressed into the flow of a data stream, visualizing the post-spatial world and smoothly integrating with one of the more refined eyes for intensified continuity — in the maelstrom of cameras he always seems to find the right impacts, the smallest human gestures. My only complaint is that this is about 20 minutes too long. Otherwise, I will watch Tony Scott directing Robert Redford as a spy any time and every time.
Always thought Brad Pitt had some striking facial similarities with and even occasionally stole a bit of Redford's flow (I'm especially reminded of him during all that under-biting charm he deploys in Moneyball) and wondered which director would pick up on it and do a father-son thing with them. Guess this mentor-protégé CIA tradecraft melodrama will have to suffice, even if they don't actually spend much on-screen time together. Tony Scott was a supernaturally gifted stylist so there are some beautiful images and tense thriller sequences in here and I even sort of like the idea of trying to convey the feelings these men have formed for each other via non-linear communication, but I really just don't get much out…

Is there anything better than Robert Redford playing the smartest guy in the room?
Sure, Pitt famously passed on Jason Bourne in favor of this tepidly received espionage thriller, but it seems like his career was able to survive it, and besides, every time I see him in something like “The Big Short” I have immediate flashbacks of Redford. So the chance to catch the two of them bouncing off of each other makes for a great ride.
Surprisingly for a Tony Scott film, it’s a lot more spy talk than shoot ‘em up spy action, but then again, don’t we already have enough Bond rip-offs?

I love spy movies, but I tend to get overly critical when they aim for a 'this is what real spies do' feel. Let's be honest, if we really knew what was going on in the world of espionage, the world of espionage wouldn't be doing its job properly.
Spy Game leans towards that sense if realism in so far that it takes place in the real world and keeps the action rather spartan focussing on what it should be focussing on, telling an intriguing and engaging spy story. In that they succeed for the most part and that is most definitely due to two things, the narrative structure and the Redford/Pitt match up.

So this has been another film that has been on my radar for a long time, especially one that I always stumbled upon while walking through the video rental store when I was a kid. Though having grown up and seen critical and audience reviews, I was afraid it would be a bore.
In many ways, it was much more exciting and thrilling than I expected. Robert Redford built a name for himself not only by playing classic, suave characters, but also by playing Thrillers in the 70s, so its no surprise he's in top form here and seems able to play Nathan Muir in his sleep.…
