Starts out like Pretty Woman but halfway through we take a wild detour into what slowly becomes, first Tarantino, then McDonagh (but good) and finally something like Pinter and Beckett rolled up together and forced to make love. One of the sleaziest films I've ever seen; the title card practically dripped saliva. The movie plays its hand in the opening minute by playing Misirlou full-blast. "You know Tarantino's cool, fun style? We're like that! But French!" And yet the film made me long for the respectful and introspective way Tarantino writes women, as so much misogyny was on display, it had me wondering whether the title was some kind of double-entendre. Women in this film are to be screwed in between fast car-rides, treated with even less respect than the rules of the road. A thankless role for Marion Cotillard.

When Jeremy Irons became the vice-chancellor of my old university, the critic in the student paper asked him about The Lion King.
