Wim Hofstee
During my studies in History and Anthropology at the University of Groningen I developed an interest in religion as a cultural and social phenomenon. Over a period of twenty five years I lectured Anthropology of Religion and Comparative Religion in the universities of Groningen, Amsterdam (UvA), Nijmegen, and during the last twelve years at the Faculty of Humanities in the University of Leiden, till my retirement in 2017. I conducted fieldwork in Italy, Japan and Brazil, took part in the creation of the European Association for the Study of Religion (EASR), and wrote on new religious movements, method & theory, and the history of the study of religion. My interests and writing projects at the moment concern the history of social anthropology, especially the anthropology of religion, and the history of colonialism.
