Ass professor European Studies, Manchester (1973-80) Full Professor of Economic History, Free University Amsterdam (1980-87) Full Professor of Contemporary History, European University Institute, Florence (1987-95) Full Professor Economic History, Leiden University (1995-2013) Full Professor of International Studies, Leiden University (2013-2016). Has written extensively on 19th and 20th century economic history, the European Union, political ecomomy and, most recently, China's Belt and Road initiative.
