One of the instruments for promoting national unity is quality education. The paper examined critically and objectively, the concept of federal character and its influence on every aspect of our national life, especially education. The study used the cutoff marks released by the Federal Ministry of Education for admission into Unity Schools in 2013. After analysis of the findings the paper, discovered loop-sidedness in the admission policy of unity schools. The paper recommended the need to review the federal character policy as it has outlived its usefulness, the need to raise the bar of education in the so-called 'educationally dis-advantaged' states and the need to promote competence and excellence in the quest for national unity.

The study adopted the descriptive survey design to seek information. One research question and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the research. The sample consisted of two hundred and two (202) undergraduates randomly selected from a Nigerian University. This was made up of seventy (70) males and one hundred and thirty-two (132) females. A 20-item questionnaire titled “Creativity & Mental Health Questionnaire (CMHQ)” was designed for data collection. Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the instrument stood at 0.60. Data analysis was carried out with the use of percentages, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and t-test. The first hypothesis was rejected while the second one was retained. Results showed that more undergraduates in a Nigerian University are highly creative and there is a strong correlation between creativity and mental health of the students.
