Papaver somniferum (binomen a Linnaeo anno 1753 statutum), sive Latinitate communi papaver, est species plantarum florentium, in Europa meridiana ad litora Mediterranei sponte gignens, ab hominibus iam aevo praehistorico culta propter semina edulia aromatica sed praecipue propter sucum e quo opium, pharmacum analgesicum et psychedelicum, paratur.
