Universitas publica est universitas quae plerumque per pecunias publicas a republica nationali vel subnationali concessas administratur, contra universitatem privatam. Num universitas nationalis habeatur publica inter civitates et regiones variat, plerumque secundum certas traditiones proprias. In nonnullis orbis terrarum regionibus (sicut Sinis), universitatibus publicis usitate est melior fama. Multae ex universitatibus publicis prominentissimis in numero optimarum universitatum a societate QS World University Rankings et Academic Ranking of World Universities habentur.[1] In Aegypto, Universitas Al-Azhar, secunda a veterrima orbis terrarum universitas, anno 975 inaugurata est.
