Counteracting a widespread interpretation of Schelling's project of a philosophy of nature as ant... more Counteracting a widespread interpretation of Schelling's project of a philosophy of nature as anti-Kantian, this paper claims that Kant's doctrine of the schematism plays a central role in the emergence and development of Schelling's project. My argument will be structured in the following way. First, I will discuss Schelling's reception of the schematism in his Ideas for a Philosophy of Nature of 1797, especially as regards his association of it with Kant's dynamical conception of matter in the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science. Relying on this reconstruction, I will argue, secondly, that Schelling brings together a central issue of the Critique of Pure Reason (the objectivity of pure concepts) and the overall problem of the Metaphysical Foundations (the transition from pure philosophy to empirical sciences) by addressing the issue of a schematism specifically related to outer sense. Thirdly, I maintain that this issue is at the core of the overall argument developed in the Ideas, where it appears in the form of a schematism of "materiality as such". Finally, I suggest that the notion of a schematism of materiality as such offers a useful key to understanding the unfolding of Schelling's project between 1797 and 1800.

The exchange of letters between Fichte and Schelling is traditionally studied from the perspectiv... more The exchange of letters between Fichte and Schelling is traditionally studied from the perspective of the transformations it entails for the conception transcendental idealism. Less attention has been given to the effects of this exchange as regards the concept of reality. This paper proposes that Fichte's introduction of the concept of "superior realism" in his WL 1804/II is a result of his letter exchange with Schelling. I argue that three aspects of Fichte's late (post-Jena) concept of reality emerge from this exchange: dynamic reality, reality of the concept and reality of the inconceivable ground. On my account, the explicit thematization of these aspects of the concept of reality is a novelty of Fichte's late works in relation to the Grundlage of 1794/5.

This paper claims that the inner drive of the discussion leading to the philosophical rupture bet... more This paper claims that the inner drive of the discussion leading to the philosophical rupture between Fichte and Schelling is the problem of the independence of nature. I argue that the otherwise rich literature on the subject, by not engaging with this problem, has led to a false dichotomy between two equally unsatisfactory possibilities of interpretation: (a) Schelling's misunderstanding of Kant's transcendental method or (b) his overcoming of it. On my account, once one engages with Schelling's philosophy of nature, it becomes clear that he, just as Fichte, is exploring the inner tensions of Kant's philosophy, even though he does it in a different and original direction.

Afin d’explorer cette hypothèse, nous analyserons d’abord la conception fichtéenne du rapport entre popularisation et flexibilisation du langage, ce qui nous permettra d’explorer les raisons systématiques du rapprochement entre langue philosophique et langue populaire avant de resaisir avec précision la compréhension du rôle philosophique du langage qui en découle.

Independently of the discussions on the development of Fichte’s philosophy, there is something that does not seem to change throughout the more than a dozen presentations of his doctrine, namely, his constant concern with the meaning of philosophy. This concern is such a structuring one for Fichte that he even decides to replace the very name of “philosophy” by another one, less heavy in meaning and better suited to elucidate the nature of this particular activity that constitutes his own project. He calls it the Wissenschaftslehre. In this term created by Fichte three verbs can be found: wissen (to know), schaffen (to create) and lehren (to teach) – we would like to propose that Fichte’s conception of philosophy can be brought out as the orchestrated action of those three activities: knowing, creating and teaching. The point here being not to say that Fichte had the idea in mind of composing these three verbs (wissen, schaffen, lehren) when he created the term Wissenschaftslehre, but only that those terms offer useful landmarks for the exploration of Fichte’s philosophical landscape.

This paper argues that Fichte, in his early works, apprehends the task of philosophy not as much ... more This paper argues that Fichte, in his early works, apprehends the task of philosophy not as much as a Critique of Reason, but rather as a self-knowledge of Spirit, thereby bringing the notion of Spirit to the center of the philosophical discussion. We explore what Fichte means by Spirit and sustain that this notion, even if it is not used in a consistent way throughout his work, covers a fundamental conceptual space of his philosophical project. The argument will be structured as an exploration of each dimension of this conceptual space, namely: (i) the Spirit as self-relation; (ii) the Spirit as productive imagination; and (iii) the Spirit as the result of learning process grounded on the human drives.

Este estudo é uma exploração da concepção de lógica como uma "história pragmática da alma [pragma... more Este estudo é uma exploração da concepção de lógica como uma "história pragmática da alma [pragmatische Seelengeschichte]", tal como formulada pelo médico e filósofo alemão Ernst Platner. Da análise dessa fórmula, pretende-se extrair um esboço do modo como ele concebe as noções de: alma, história, lógica e filosofia. Para tanto, o argumento será estruturado como uma análise: (i) da alma enquanto objeto de estudo da lógica; (ii) da história pragmática enquanto método de estudo da lógica; e (iii) da compreensão da relação entre lógica e filosofia extraída por Platner dessa abordagem. O objetivo deste trabalho não é fazer uma avaliação crítica da teoria de Platner, mas antes fazer um esboço do horizonte de questões que se abre a partir dessa compreensão da lógica (a porta de entrada da filosofia) como uma espécie de história da alma.

The aim of the article is to highlight the political significance of the advent of Kant’s Critiqu... more The aim of the article is to highlight the political significance of the advent of Kant’s Critique. In order to establish it, a double thesis is defended: (A) there is a juridical matrix underlying the conceptual movement of Kant's critical philosophy, whose (B) emancipatory and revolutionary strength can only be revealed in the light of the context of its formulation. The argument will be deployed in the following way: (i) an exploration of the connections between the formula “a revolution in thought” articulated in the Critique and the historical context of its publication; followed by (ii) an exam of the juridical metaphor of the Tribunal of Reason and the way in which it embodies an idea of what philosophy is supposed to be, and finally, as a conclusion, (iii) the suggestion of an interpretative hypothesis according to which the notion of contract is a conceptual operator accomplishing an analogous movement to the one required from critical philosophy: the passage from the subjective level to the intersubjective one.

This article advances the hypothesis that the Fichtean enterprise of grounding all possible exper... more This article advances the hypothesis that the Fichtean enterprise of grounding all possible experience in a fundamental principle has to fail in order to succeed one of its most important tasks: reformulating the very idea of subjectivity. In order to ground this hypothesis, the paper will be divided in four parts: (i) the first one will analyze the starting point of the work where Fichte lays the foundations of his philosophical project (Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre) so as to show that its first principle contains a fundamental ambiguity. We will then (ii) suggest that this very ambiguity reveals itself in the Anstoß, the conceptual tool through which Fichte intends to get rid of the Kantian notion of thing-in-itself. In a third moment (iii), we will explore the effects of this abandonment of the thing-in-itself on the relation between the finite and the infinite, what will bring us to the notion of failure. Finally (iv), we will propose to interpret this failure as a positive driving force of a permanent calling into question of the subject and its language.

This book argues that Fichte’s philosophy is an investigation of the concept of philosophy leadin... more This book argues that Fichte’s philosophy is an investigation of the concept of philosophy leading to the replacement of the name φιλοσοφία by the name Wissenschaftslehre. Such a replacement is the result of his reception of Kant's transcendental approach as a revolution leading to a new conception of philosophy, not as much as the love of wisdom, but rather as the knowledge of knowledge. When conceived in those terms, philosophical knowledge is the grasping of the activities grounding the possibility of the distinction between subject and object. Now, this approach requires a new conception of the function of philosophical language, insofar as it should not represent objects, but rather manifest the operation of cognizing activities on which objectivity is to be grounded. As a result, the exposition of philosophy acquires a performative dimension, since it should not as much define its concepts, but rather show their operation. In face of this challenge, Fichte operates a variation of the conceptual languages within which philosophy is presented (one philosophy, multiple presentations - one spirit, multiple letters). The constant revitalization of this praxis depends on its turn on a pedagogical work aiming at: (i) bringing the scholarly language closer to the everyday language; (ii) building a historical consciousness among those that philosophize; and (iii) developing a collective space for the educational praxis. Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre can thus be understood as an exploration and reevaluation of what philosophy is.

Curso privado ministrado por Schelling em Stuttgart entre fevereiro e julho de 1810 no qual ele expõe as linhas gerais do seu sistema. Trata-se de um dos únicos textos em que Schelling esboça uma visão de todo de seu pensamento em seus três eixos temáticos fundamentais: relação absoluto-existência, natureza e espírito. Também de um ponto de vista diacrônico, as Preleções constituem um importante instrumento de compreensão do percurso schellingiano, pois o autor retoma a estrutura sistemática de sua filosofia da identidade (1801-1809), em relação à qual situa problemas centrais de sua fase intermediária como o estatuto da liberdade e da existência humana (1809-1821), o que, por sua vez, antecipa questionamentos que culminarão na distinção entre filosofia negativa e filosofia positiva, típica de seu pensamento tardio (1821-1854).

This paper sustains that Oswald de Andrade’s Anthropophagy, formulated for the first time in 1928... more This paper sustains that Oswald de Andrade’s Anthropophagy, formulated for the first time in 1928, can be read as a decolonial project avant la lettre. In order to establish this thesis, we propose to reconstruct the project of the Brazilian thinker through a detailed analysis of the first aphorism of his Manifesto Antropófago (Anthropophagist Manifesto). We will argue that, similarly to what will be later articulated by the decolonial approach, Andrade indicates: (i) that the cultural and economic dimensions of colonialism are entangled ramifications of a larger structure of domination; (ii) that capitalism is an aspect of this larger structure; and (iii) that it is necessary to articulate a third political path irreducible to both capitalism and communism. Anthropophagy would thus function not only as the evident metaphor of cultural appropriation, but also as a diagnosis of the consequences of the colonial domination and as an apparatus to confront them within a decolonial project.

This paper explores the contrast between two meanings of thinking: (i) one implied by the Cartesi... more This paper explores the contrast between two meanings of thinking: (i) one implied by the Cartesian and Kantian philosophy, the two thinkers that have arguably the deepest influence on the constellation of Western philosophical problems and (ii) another implied by the philosophical-anthropological project of the Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro. The thesis here defended is that, in the Cartesian and Kantian philosophy, thinking is related to ruling and legislating over the experience through concepts, while in Viveiros de Castros' theoretical enterprise, thinking is rather to explore the limits of conceptual constructions when confronted with the experience of alterity.

Alguns filósofos contemporâneos sugerem que essa revolução deva ser realizada de um ponto de vista geográfico, pois os problemas fundamentais da Filosofia parecem gravitar todos em torno do mesmo centro fixo, o qual não é confrontado à fragilidade de sua posição geográfica contingente, o centro europeu. O objetivo deste artigo é reconstruir as linhas gerais dessa nova revolução copernicana como um procedimento de reavaliação de três vetores centrais do saber: o Eu, o Outro e o Todo.

Se, à primeira vista, os dois universos de discurso parecem tão distantes que dificilmente se vê o que os aproxima, parece haver contudo uma flama comum que os anima, na medida em que ambos buscam evitar o aprisionamento do espírito local nos grilhões de um universo simbólico que não é o seu. O objetivo deste estudo é explorar cada uma das obras, em seus respectivos contextos, a fim de delinear os aspectos dessa chama comum que as motiva; após a confrontação dos dois textos, far-se-á, como conclusão, um breve esboço dos possíveis ganhos dessa abordagem comparativa.

history. According to this hypothesis, there is a certain tool that plays a fundamental role in the production of this new philosophical notion: the dream. The argument will be developed in four parts. We will first proceed to (i) an analysis of the role of the hypothesis of the dream in the formulation of the notion of Res Cogitans, what will bring us to (ii) an exploration of the conception of private world supposed by such a hypothesis so as to (iii) clarify the specificity of the Cartesian notion of knowledge, a knowledge that must be acquirable in a dream; in conclusion (iv) we will indicate in a schematic way the historic-cultural anchor of the Cartesian dream where the subject is originated.

O fio condutor da análise é a primeira tese da Etica a Nicômaco, em que o filósofo parece cometer uma falácia ao argumentar que, dado que toda ação visa a algum bem, o bem é aquilo a que todas as ações visam. Argumenta-se que a inferência não é falaciosa em razão da peculiaridade do dominio prático, que se manifesta na identidade entre bem e fim. Tal identidade daria origem ao que chamamos, por hipótese, de significação prática.

Este estudo é uma exploração do primeiro grande movimento cultural brasileiro que se deu conta do fosso existente entre as manifestações locais do real e os instrumentos cognitivos da consciência que buscavam exprimi-las: a Antropofagia. Tal fosso poderia ser descrito, para utilizar uma expressão filosoficamente consagrada, como o resultado de uma inadequação entre o em-si do qual processo de formação da consciência parte e o saber auto-reflexivo que ela almeja; sabe-se, aliás, que Hegel, justamente o autor que formulou o problema nesses termos, chamou de "viagem de descoberta" o caminho pelo qual ele mesmo buscou desvelar as etapas do processo pelo qual a consciência, partindo do seu aqui e agora, experimenta a inadequação de seu saber em relação à realidade em-si que ela busca exprimir e, em função dessa experiência de inadequação, avança na construção de formas cada vez mais complexas de autorreflexão. Nesse sentido, temos o intuito de mostrar que a Antropofagia, enquanto expressão paradigmática dessa experiência de inadequação da consciência em relação ao real, constitui um dos momentos cruciais dessa viagem de descoberta entre nós.

Vorträge vielmehr eine neue Möglichkeit: weitergeführt, vertieft und zu eigenständigen Aufsätzen entwickelt zu werden. Wir, die Vortragenden (und jene, die sich uns anschlossen), die zu AutorInnen dieses Bands geworden
sind, sind Herrn Sepp für diese ausgezeichnete Gelegenheit zu großem Dank verpflichtet. Die damals leiblich vorgetragenen philosophischen Positionen
durften auf diese Weise eine feste Form und in Seiten dieses libri virides 30 ihren eigenen „Leib“ und auch ihre eigene „Position“ einnehmen. Nach fast zwei Jahren sorgfältiger Arbeit wurden die Beiträge in diesem Band als dem zweiten Ort ihrer Begegnung schließlich versammelt. Die Unzugänglichkeit des Selbst – Philosophische Perspektiven auf die Subjektivität ist ein Buch geworden.

We invite abstracts on any aspect of Kant’s philosophy for the yearly Leuven Kant Conference. The conference aims at stimulating fruitful exchanges between established scholars, young researchers, and PhD students.
The conference will feature a combination of on-campus and online talks. Participants will be able to attend the on-campus talks on Zoom. The online talks will be fully online, i.e., all participants will join a Zoom meeting regardless of their location. All talks will take place between 1 pm and 7 pm to accommodate different time zones. The selection of abstracts will be independent of speakers’ preferred options.
Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be submitted through the electronic form available at the website. The abstracts, including the title, should be prepared for double-blind review by removing any identification details.
Presentation time will be 25 minutes + 20 minutes for discussion. We offer limited travel grants to PhD students and other early career researchers without funding of their own.

O grupo foi criado em junho de 2019 a partir de uma ideia do professor Ivan Domingues (UFMG) de coordenar os horizontes de seu trabalho sobre o assunto (condensados de modo emblemático no livro Filosofia no Brasil, ao explorar as várias faces do paradigma da "formação") com a pesquisa desenvolvida por Luis Fellipe Garcia (LMU-Munique) sobre a Antropofagia como conceito filosófico e sobre abordagens decoloniais da filosofia. O objetivo do grupo é criar um espaço de pesquisa coletiva sobre as múltiplas relações entre o modo como o saber filosófico se constrói no Brasil e o modo como o Brasil é ele mesmo pensado do ponto de vista filosófico. O grupo tem atualmente trinta integrantes, entre pesquisadores, pós-graduandos e graduandos da UFMG e de outras universidades.
