Ausgezeichnet mit dem Erzherzog Johann Forschungspreis des Landes Steiermark 2018

Dieses Buch präsentiert Ergebnisse des künstlerischen FWF-Forschungsprojektes „Jazz & the City: Identität einer Jazz(haupt)stadt“, das von 2011 – 2013 an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz durchgeführt wurde.

Basierend auf der Auswertung zahlreicher schriftlicher Quellen und Interviews mit Zeitzeugen erfolgte eine ausführliche Dokumentation der Grazer Jazzgeschichte im Zeitraum von der akademischen Etablierung des Jazz an der damaligen Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst im Jahr 1965 bis 2015. Neben der Darstellung bedeutender Ereignisse und Biografien von MusikerInnen, Ensembles und VeranstalterInnen werden die Entwicklung der akademischen Institute für Jazz und Jazzforschung und die komplexe Verknüpfung der Jazzszene mit der allgemeinen Kulturlandschaft der Stadt Graz erörtert.

Ein weiterer wesentlicher Teil der Arbeit ist – im Sinne der künstlerischen Forschung – die Auseinandersetzung mit den künstlerischen Prozessen in der Grazer Jazzentwicklung, die in einem Kompositionsvorhaben exemplarisch nachgezeichnet und aus der Perspektive des künstlerisch Schaffenden kritisch hinterfragt werden. Die schriftliche Dokumentation dieses Kompositionsprozesses enthält zugleich eine musikimmanente Analyse des neuen Werkes, in dem verschiedene künstlerische Strömungen der Grazer Jazzgeschichte verdeutlicht werden. Die gesamte Partitur dieser Komposition sowie eine Tonaufnahme derselben mit ausgewählten Protagonisten der Grazer Jazzszene liegen dem Buch auf CD bei. Fußnotenapparat, Quellen- und Literaturverzeichnis, Diskografie, Bildteil und Personenregister vervollständigen das Buch.

Die Musik des Ensembles um den Pianisten und Komponisten Michael Kahr ist eine Hommage an die Jazzgeschichte – eine künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte der Jazzstadt Graz und ihren vielschichtigen Verbindungen zum internationalen Jazz.

Aus dem Blickwinkel der Gegenwart eröffnen das Repertoire und die unterschiedlichen musikalischen Konzepte der Jazzgeschichte – jeglicher Nostalgie zum Trotz – spannende Perspektiven zur Definition der eigenen künstlerischen Identität. Vergangene Momente erscheinen im Licht der Improvisation in neuer Gestalt, und neue Kompositionen entstehen als inspiriertes zeitgenössisches Statement, bei gleichzeitigem Bewusstsein der eigenen Geschichte.

Das Ensemble spielt ausgewählte Stücke des Grazer Jazz (wie Kleinschuster Sextett, Josel Trio und das Harry Pepl / Werner Pirchner JazzZwio) und stellt in den eigenen Werken Referenzen zur Musik von Dieter Glawischnig, Harald Neuwirth, Ewald Oberleitner, Karlheinz Miklin und anderen Veteranen der Grazer Jazzszene her. Auch die Verbindung von Jazz und Lyrik hat ihren Platz. Insgesamt versprechen das profunde Verständnis der Jazztradition und die spontane Ausdrucksfreude aller beteiligten Musiker ein faszinierendes, swingendes Hörerlebnis.

The activities and publications of the International Society for Jazz Research IGJ and the Institute for Jazz Research at the current University of Music and Perform- ing Arts in Graz are frequently referred to as influential factors regarding the de- velopment of scientific jazz research in German-speaking countries. This chapter provides information on the historical conditions in the city of Graz and their in- terdependencies with the development, structure and international positioning of the academic institutes and the IGJ. Central for the study are the development of research objectives, the socio-cultural situation in the postwar era, cultural-politi- cal measures, higher education policies, individual initiatives, ramifications of the changing media landscape as well as the increasing institutionalization, profession- alization and internationalization of jazz and jazz research in Graz. The study is based on the results of the research project Jazz & the City: Identity of a Capital of Jazz, which was funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF.

This study presents socio-cultural and harmonic analyses of Clare Fischer’s compositional approach. It incorporates not only the results of interviews with Fischer himself, family members and long-time colleagues, but also introduces a large collection of private letters, used exclusively in this study by permission of Fischer’s wife Donna. The harmonic component includes detailed comparative analyses of one composition and one solo piano performance, which reveal aspects of influence and considerable detail regarding Fischer’s idiosyncratic harmonic style.
Various methodological and theoretical considerations are outlined and a pragmatic approach towards the examinations of both Fischer’s socio-cultural context and distinctive harmonic process proposed. The study discusses aspects of Fischer’s status and influence within the jazz community, his stylistic network, his work in the popular music sector, the concept of emotion in his music, and his relationship in socio-cultural and musical terms with Dimitri Shostakovich and Bill Evans. The work continues with comparative examinations of harmony in Fischer’s composition ‘The Early Years’, which shows parallels to passages from Shostakovich’s first symphony and Fischer’s solo piano interpretation of the folk song ‘Du, Du liegst mir im Herzen’, which reveals significant differences from the mainstream in tonal jazz as exemplified by Bill Evans’ harmonic treatment of the folk tune ‘Danny Boy’.
A more precise definition of the relationship between Fischer’s harmonic techniques and his contextual background emerges from these analyses. The study concludes with a summary and analysis of Fischer’s harmonic choices as expressions of personal experiences and general socio-cultural matters, and offers perspectives for future investigations of jazz music utilizing interdisciplinary methodologies.

Upper Styrian Big Band Folk is an arts-based research project which has aimed for the exploration of local identity, authenticity and meaning as manifested in and interrelated with jazz composition and performance. This exposition outlines the project, its underlying aesthetic values and presents a critical reflection of the work. Two videos show the musical scores and audio recordings of two selected compositions for large jazz orchestra which represent a significant aspect of artistic research in this project. A hermeneutic reading of the music offers insight into the work's contextual background and aesthetic matters.

Artistic research is an emerging branch of research in the arts, which operates in and through artistic practices. Jazz researchers have emphasized the need for an independent, international network to develop the field. This symposium will formally inaugurate the network, provide opportunities for discussions and invites presentations on a variety of relevant themes and topics including (but not restricted to) the following:

# specifics of artistic jazz research
# methodical considerations
# presentation/publication formats
# best practice models
# quality assurance and assessment criteria
# relationship of artistic jazz research to the ‘scientific’ research communities
# further development of the network

The symposium aims for a broad discussion organized in several themed panels and a small selection of individual papers and artistic research presentations. The panels involve one or more opening statements (5-10 minutes), followed by longer discussions including questions and comments from the audience. Individual paper presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes of discussion. However, we also welcome proposals for alternative presentation formats in artistic research as well as suggestions of additional themes and topics. Experienced academics as well as emerging artist-researchers are encouraged to contribute.

Proposals for contributions should include: title, name, institutional affiliation, country, type of contribution (panel, paper, alternative format), abstract (up to 150 words) and a short CV (up to 100 words).

Please submit your proposal via e-mail to the convenor (michael.kahr@kug.ac.at) until 19 August, 2019. Acceptance of abstracts will be sent to authors soon thereafter. The full program will be made available via www.jammusiclab.com.
