    Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has consistently revolutionised the field of nanotechnology, and bio-based AgNPs have emerged as efficient therapeutic tools in biomedical science. The present work focused on the synthesis and characterisation of eco-friendly AgNPs from Brassica nigra (BN), and the evaluation of antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, and antioxidant activity in the MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. The characteristics of BN-AgNPs was studied using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, particle size analysis, electro kinetic/zeta potential analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).     Vitamin D plays a critical role in bone metabolism and many cellular and immunological processes. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] is produced in the skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and is a good indicator of vitamin D status. The aim of this study was to determine summer/ winter differences in serum 25(OH)D3 and Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) in Saudi pre and postmenopausal women and in adult males.     Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by hyperglycemia and is associated with dyslipidemia and disturbed liver function. Aim of the present work is to assess the liver enzymes and to find its association with hyperlipidemic profile in T2DM. Total of 157 subjects were studied and divided into two groups; diabetes (n=81) and non-diabetes (n=76).     Diabetic nephropathy is the consequence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and it is characterized by continuous albuminuria. The aim of the study was to investigate and correlate the lipid profile abnormalities in different stages of albuminuria to understand the checkpoint before progression to end stage renal disease (ESRD). A total of 154 type 2 diabetic patients were included in the study. Urine samples of all patients were subject to biochemical analysis and divided into diabetes with normoalbuminuria (n=52), diabetes with microalbuminuria (n=51), and diabetes with overt proteinuria (n=51) groups, depending upon urinary albumin creatinine ratio (ACR) of 300 mg/24 hours respectively.     Auto immune thyroid disease (AITD) is the common organ specific autoimmune disorder, Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) and Grave's disease (GD) are its well-known sequelae. It occurs due to loss of tolerance to autoantigens thyroid peroxidase (TPO), thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSH-R) which leads to the infiltration of the gland. T cells in chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (cAIT) induce apoptosis in thyroid follicular cells and cause destruction of the gland. Presences of TPO antibodies are common in HT and GD, while Tg has been reported as an independent predictor of thyroid malignancy. Cytokines are small proteins play an important role in autoimmunity, by stimulating B and T cells. Various cytokines IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL- 14, TNF-α and IFN-γ are found in thyroid follicular cells which enhance inflammatory response with nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandins.

    The present study describes the antibacterial activity of five selected fruits on four pathogenic bacteria isolated from patients suffering with wound infections. Ethanolic extracts of fruits were more effective than aqueous extracts. Punica granatum has shown highest antibacterial activity followed by Malus domestica, Citrus limonium and Citrus limetta. Lowest antibacterial activity was recorded for Solanum lycospersicum. Among all bacteria tested highest antibacterial activity was recorded against S. aureus and least was recorded for K. pneumoniae.

    3 Abstract: Recently, natural products have been evaluated as sources of antimicrobial agents with efficacies against a variety of microorganisms. This study described the antibacterial and antifungal activities of pomegranate peel extract (rind), seed extract, juice and whole fruit on the selected bacteria and fungi. The peel extract has shown highest antimicrobial activity compared to other extracts. Among the selected bacterial and fungal cultures, the highest antibacterial activity was recorded against Staphylococcus aureus and among fungi high activity against Aspergillus niger was recorded.

    Preeclampsia complicates 2-8% of all pregnancies and is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and pre-term delivery in world. In concern to the increasing number of preeclamptic cases and lack of data about the interrelation between levels of trace elements and preeclampsia, we conducted a hospital based case-control study to assess the risk of preeclampsia in relation to concentrations of trace elements like copper, manganese and zinc in a hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study consisted of 120 pregnant women divided into three groups of 40 each--control, HR group and the PET group. The serum levels of Cu, Mn and Zn were estimated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Analysis of trace elements revealed that mean values of Cu, Mn and Zn were 2.01±0.43, 0.125±0.07 and 1.30±0.83 mg/L respectively in control.     Urolithiasis is a common problem in elderly population of developed countries. Urinary stones formation is thought to be multifactorial because of climatic conditions, eating habits, luxurious lifestyle. A monocentric study was carried out to find the rate and chemical composition of calculi in Saudi Population of Riyadh. We studied total 332 urolithiasis patients of King Khalid University Hospital, of age ranging from 1‐90 years (255 M & 77 F). Stone samples were obtained after surgery, for analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy determines the type and composition of each stone. Urolithiasis was mainly observed in patients aged 51‐60 yrs (24%), especially males belonging 51‐60 yrs (25.8%). Anatomically, stones were found prevalent in kidneys (79.2%). Nephrolithiasis mainly affect females (88.3%).     The impact of trace elements, especially zinc, selenium, copper, and magnesium, on male fertility has gained great interest and significance. Increased oxidative stress and altered trace element levels are probable etiological factors underlying male reproductive dysfunction and infertility. The present study focused on the evaluation of seminal oxidative markers, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and trace element levels in the normozoospermic fertile control group (n = 40) and asthenozoospermic infertile group (n = 30). Semen from infertile men exhibited significantly higher ROS and MDA levels accompanied with significant decline in TAC and trace element (zinc and magnesium) levels. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between trace elements and oxidative markers with sperm motility.     Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a sight-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Oxidative stress generated on account of hyperglycemic state may lead to retinal abnormalities including DR. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the status of antioxidant enzymes; superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), in different stages of DR severity in subjects with type 1 DM (T1DM) and type 2 DM (T2DM). Methods: The cross-sectional study enrolled 148 subjects with T1DM (n = 17), T2DM (n = 96), and nondiabetic controls (n = 35). Subjects with DM were divided into 2 subgroups based on DR severity (mild-to-severe nonproliferative DR [NPDR] and proliferative DR [PDR]), and serum glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profile, SOD, and CAT were estimated.     Pregnancy termination consecutively for three or more times during the first trimester is termed as Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). In addition to the abnormal karyotype, heavy metal induced oxidative damage may contribute as prominent etiological factor in pregnancy termination. Oxidative stress is considered crucial in etiology underlying RPL with altered antioxidant status and subsequent DNA damage. The current case controlled study investigated Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), DNA damage (8OHdG) and heavy metals in RPL group (n = 30) and the women with successful pregnancies and no cases of miscarriage as control group (30 women). Heavy metals -Antimony (Sb) and Arsenic (As) were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass spectrophotometry (ICP-MS). There was significant decrease in levels of TAC in RPL group compared to healthy pregnant women (P < 0.05). On contrary, elevated levels of As and Sb were observed in RPL group with subsequent increase in the levels of 8OHdG (P < 0.001); indicating extensive DNA damage in these patients. Furthermore, increased levels of As and Sb in RPL group were positively correlated with 8OHdG and negatively with total antioxidant capacity. The outcome of the study provides clear insight of the role of metal induced oxidative stress that plays a vital role in the pathophysiology underlying RPL.

    The study assessed trace element selenium (Se) and a heavy metal lead (Pb) in patients with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its associated proteinuria. Total 275 subjects aged between 30 and 90 years were studied: 93 T2DM, 98 T2DM with proteinuria, and 84 as controls. Serum Se and Pb were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) and other biochemical indices by ROCHE module COBAS 6000 analyzer. Statistical analysis was done by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at P  < 0.0001 followed by Tukey’s honest test. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was applied to observe the effects of Se and Pb on FPG and ACR. Decreased Se levels were observed in T2DM and T2DM with proteinuria with no significant difference and serum Pb was found within reference range in both groups. Se showed no significant association with FBG and ACR while mid-upper tertile of Pb was significantly associated with ACR of T2DM with the proteinuria group ( P  < 0.01). Se is known to have a U-shaped relationship with T2DM. Low Se levels in both groups may be due to the effect of disease and its related inflammation. Detected levels of Pb suggest that studied population had lower exposure to it. Association of Pb with ACR showed consistency with the classical studies that even low levels of Pb may cause the renal deterioration.

    Preeclampsia is characterized by development of high blood pressure (hypertension) and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation. It is found in 3‐ 10% of pregnancies and remains a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The etiology of preeclampsia is unknown. Preeaclamptic pregnancies are characterized by endothelial dysfunction, disturbed placentation, oxidative stress, and an exaggerated inflammatory response to pregnancy. A possible modification of these pathophysiological events by lipids, nutrients, and antioxidant supplementation has been hypothesized in previous reports, suggesting that the dietary factors may play a role in Preeclampsia. This review was undertaken to show the relationship between the dietary factors and risk of developing preeclampsia. The review finally suggests women to have a diet containing plant food (vegetables, fruits and vegetable oils) rich in calcium, vitamin D and antioxidants.

    Trace element (TE) disturbances are well noted in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its associated complications. In present study, the effect of proteinuria on serum copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) in T2DM patients with and without proteinuria was seen. Total subjects were aged between 30 and 90 years; 73 had proteinuria, 76 had T2DM with proteinuria, 76 had T2DM, and 75 were controls.     Preeclampsia (PE) is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. It occurs in women with first or multiple pregnancies and is characterized by new onset hypertension and proteinuria. Improper placentation is mainly responsible for the disease. If PE remains untreated, it moves towards more serious condition known as eclampsia. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, proteinuria, obesity, family history, nulliparity, multiple pregnancies and thrombotic vascular disease contribute as the risk factors for PE. PE triggered metabolic stress causes vascular injury, thus contributing to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and/or chronic kidney disease (CKD) in future.     Preeclampsia complicates 2-8% of all pregnancies and is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and pre-term delivery in world. In concern to the increasing number of preeclamptic cases and lack of data about the interrelation between levels of trace elements and preeclampsia, we conducted a hospital based case-control study to assess the risk of preeclampsia in relation to concentrations of trace elements like copper, manganese and zinc in a hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study consisted of 120 pregnant women divided into three groups of 40 each--control, HR group and the PET group. The serum levels of Cu, Mn and Zn were estimated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Analysis of trace elements revealed that mean values of Cu, Mn and Zn were 2.01±0.43, 0.125±0.07 and 1.30±0.83 mg/L respectively in control.     Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by hyperglycemia and is associated with dyslipidemia and disturbed liver function. Aim of the present work is to assess the liver enzymes and to find its association with hyperlipidemic profile in T2DM.     The present study was undertaken to evaluate the possible ameliorating effect of butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT), associated with ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA)-induced oxidative stress and liver injury in mice. The treatment of mice with Fe-NTA alone enhances ornithine decarboxylase activity to 4.6 folds, protein carbonyl formation increased up to 2.9 folds and DNA synthesis expressed in terms of [3H] thymidine incorporation increased to 3.2 folds, and antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes decreased to 1.8–2.5 folds, compared with the corresponding saline-treated controls. These changes were reversed significantly ( p < 0.001) in animals receiving a pretreatment of BHT. Our data show that BHT can reciprocate the toxic effects of Fe-NTA and can serve as a potent chemopreventive agent.
