A central interest in developing professionalism resides in the potential for practitioners to le... more A central interest in developing professionalism resides in the potential for practitioners to learn from and with one another in ways that support transformations of their knowledge practices. However, negotiation between multiple perspectives, interests, practices and traditions intertwines cognitive-epistemic with socio-relational and affective aspects, which may lead to tension and conflict. While tension can disable learning, we argue that identifying these tensions should be viewed as a significant source for change and development. We will present two cases, which show similar patterns. Tension in medical teams is a threat to patient safety. However, an uncritical attitude does not foster learning, and instructors at simulation training courses may therefore put focus on tensions through questioning. Eventually learners may develop skills in analysis, which cover explanations and strategies and which provide a fruitful approach to the problems. The second case investigated te...
We discuss our design for implementing a computer-based tutor for learning object-oriented design... more We discuss our design for implementing a computer-based tutor for learning object-oriented design. Traditional ITS techniques do not transfer well to open-ended tasks such as information systems modelling. Some have also argued that such systems take away many tasks, which are important for learners to carry out themselves, like error analysis and self-reflection Furthermore we build on the assistant metaphor as a means to provide a tutor to facilitate learning. We have thus constructed a system that builds on cognitive apprenticeship and uses ITS techniques to encourage the user to reflect and think critically using an assistant metaphor.
We take situated learning as the starting point for designing a training tool for an undergraduat... more We take situated learning as the starting point for designing a training tool for an undergraduate course on conceptual modeling for information system design. The purpose of the tool is to create training scenarios that provide the same kind of problems and complexity which conceptual modelers face in the 'real world'. School training of conceptual modeling has mostly consisted of problems of well-structured character with ideal solutions. In this tool we want the students to practice in scenarios that resemble authentic environments while receiving some support in critical phases. The design of the tool is based on issues such as cognitive apprenticeship, authentic activity and language use, which have been in focus in the situated learning debate (Brown, Collins & Duguid 1989.), (Ramberg & Karlgren 1998).
