Likert‐scale responses were subjected to principal component analysis and then K‐mean cluster analysis, distinguishing four groups of respondents. Explanations for group membership were then sought from responses to open‐ended survey questions.FindingsThere was common agreement among respondents that, when making their career decisions, they had expected to enjoy good community image, and that their work would be socially useful, satisfying and flexible. Respondents also agreed that careers in ICT are rewarding, and provide opportunities, and disagreed with prevailing negative stereotypes about the industry. Opinions diverged on the organisation‐specific issues of management approachability and equality, as well as around respondents' confidence in their own technical ability and their intention to encourage young women to enter the industry.Originality/valueThis paper identifies distinct patterns of response and thereby provides support for the thesis that the widely reported discomfort of women within the ICT industry is not a cultural (industry‐wide) phenomenon but, rather, one that has its roots within particular workplace relationships. It is these relationships that appear to encourage or undermine confidence and women's intentions to encourage others to enter ICT.

Jim and Bridget knew the philosophy of hospitality and the hospitality of philosophy. We have very fond memories and often met Pepe, Dom and Marcus at the Marshall home. We are sorry for their loss. As Pepe said when she rang me 'It's a release for Jim'. He had suffered five years or more of dementia. This was tragic. I did my grieving for Jim five years ago at the point he lost his identity to Alzheimer's. I was astonished at his gentleness and calmness when I tried to explain who I was. I said 'Jim you were the Dean of Education at the University of Auckland' and I tried to explain to him what that meant. He merely replied 'Was I?' He gave the same response when I told him his own story of being a world scholar, about the many papers he had given around the world: in London, Oxford, Stanford, and Leuven. He simply said 'Did I?' Dementia is a disease of old age that threatens the connections between mind, meaning and personal identity. I know that Jim himself would be capable of expounding on this theme because his life was spent in search of an adequate account of identity. I hesitate to speculate what Jim might have said but he might have said that 'Alzheimer's robs the mind of the victim'

The Overview of the Australian ICT Industry reported that women comprised only 15% of ICT specialists within Australia in 2005 (DCITA 2005). Senator Coonan, Australia's Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, recently stated that women currently comprise 'only about one-fifth of the ICT workforce'(Coonan 2005).

Culture Clash in Computerized Classrooms

In this chapter, we focus on the introduction of computers into high school classrooms in Ontario... more In this chapter, we focus on the introduction of computers into high school classrooms in Ontario, Canada. Many studies of computer introduction focus on issues of technical implementation: issues of how people learn the techniques and, indeed, the “language” of computers. This concentration reflects a certain definition of the problems surrounding the introduction of ICTs into schools. Essentially, the problems are seen as those of overcoming the considerable challenges presented by selection of the hardware and software, technology installation and maintenance, and staff training and development. The methodology of such research, whether qualitative or quantitative, reflects this definition of the problem in its focus. And, as with all research, the definition of the problem and the methodological focus have a great deal of influence on what we “find.”

It outlines what we mean by'practices' as a technical concept, and identifies some key implications for research design and methodology of taking a practice approach to researching social phenomena. We pay particular attention to a concept of'connective ...
