RCE Greater Dhaka has the highest population densities, poverty, natural disasters compared to other RCEs in the world. However, appropriate training and guidance are given to the graduates to be entrepreneurs to carry on their developmental ideas into projects in rural areas. This case study will highlight a few inspirational stories of IUBAT graduates who completed their graduation by KBAD financial and advisory supports. Three cases, one on maternal health, one on integrated rural development and one on community development illustrate achievement in sustainable rural development.
Saad Safe Motherhood Program (SSMP) is an effective health campaign started from January 2014 for the detection of cervix cancer among rural women; 45 persons of three villages undergo medical diagnosis and awareness building program each month, is carried out under the leadership of one of the nursing graduates of IUBAT. Bancharampur Integrated Haor Development Project (BIHDP) is for up-lifting socio-economic conditions of local fishermen and villagers by providing training on improved fish cultivation, hygiene for women and access to professional education for the rural youth, and the project is headed by one of the agriculture graduates. Opportunity for Posterity (OfP) is an inspirational work done by a business graduate for rural development through alternative approaches that make food for the poor available round the year on stable price, ensures primary and IT education and promote improved farming techniques.
Under OfP, farmers are getting fair prices of their produces accessing to market and information; children, students, farmers are getting access to computer and internet; financial support for health services; fish and duck farming, cow fattening, and the rice-mill are providing a sustainable food security chain - changing lifestyle of the undeserved communities in the famine affected northern region of Bangladesh by OfP.
These three initiatives will be elaborated in this paper as illustrations of how KBAD supported graduates are enabling sustainable rural development in selective areas of Bangladesh by assimilating local resources, knowledge and skills to strengthen community peace and prosperity.
