Take care of yourself and each other. Please stay safe ♡
one plus of living in chicago is that this region votes decently progressively in elections (we can debate on how effective our picked ppl are but that’s another topic)
and with the amount of ppl here it usually means that Illinois, by default, is a decently reliable blue state
there are a lot of laws and protections we have that other states don’t, which i’m super grateful for.
i don’t know i’m trying to cheer myself up, but I keep thinking of everyone who’s gonna be affected horribly by this election. we should’ve had better.
We just got to fight a bit harder now. Take it day by day, pace ourselves, help each other, and keep moving forward.
Today is going to be rough for so many people. It’s going to be rough for you. There are things you can’t change today.
But you can take care of yourself. Eat breakfast, drink water, take a long shower, put on clean clothes/favorite clothes. Checking in on the politics as needed, rather than wallowing in them all day. Put on a comfort movie or show, and watch that for a while. Focus on your job if you have to be there today. Reach out if you need help.
You can also check in on your friends- making sure they have eaten and had water and showered and have something comforting. Reach out if they might need help. The only way out of this is through, and we need each other to get there.
We will have a long fight ahead of us for the next 4 years. We would have had a long fight ahead of us regardless of who won; only the kind of fight would have been different. This is the fight we have: survival and damage control. Not the fight we wanted, but it is what it is, and we’re still going to use tooth and nail.
Today is Day 1.
Today is checking with your clerk’s office, if you mailed your ballot, to ensure your ballot got counted. Today is weathering the despair. Today is taking care of yourself and checking on your loved ones to make sure they have what they need to weather Day 1 with you.
Tomorrow is resolving to vote in the next local elections to aid in damage control, and planning the next steps.
Survival and damage control.
Hope is not a fragile flower, easily crushed beneath a fascist boot. Hope is a fighter with blood on her knuckles and dirt on her knees, and we are going to help her get back on her feet every time.
if you’re feeling powerless right now—and god knows I am—here’s a reminder you can donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds, the Trans Law Center, Gaza Soup Kitchen, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, and hundreds of other charities that will work to mitigate the damage that has been and will continue to be inflicted
life continues. we still have the capacity to do good, important work. that matters
i got too optimistic and forgot kamala harris was dealing with the combined powers of racism and misogyny
yo hey US people who sent in absentee ballots, they are tossing mail-in ballots for no reason. i just had to call my county board of elections and demand a cure for my ballot because north carolina didn’t send out any notices of issues with ballots, and the issues are fake. if you voted by mail-in make sure your ballot was actually counted
Check your ballot!
Everything feels awful right now but it isn’t really. We still don’t officially have a winner, but regardless of how the presidential election ends up, I wanted to take a minute and find what lights I can in the 3 a.m. darkness. Here’s what I know:
* Kentucky overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to undermine the public education system by offering private school vouchers:
* Delaware has elected a transgender woman to the House of Representatives, the first out trans person of any gender ever elected to congress:
* For the first time in history, two Black women will be serving in the senate at the same time, and they are only the fourth and fifth Black women ever elected to the senate:
* New York State has passed a constitutional amendment enshrining the rights of pregnant people (including the right to an abortion), LGBTQIA+ people, the disabled, immigrants regardless of legal status, and other at-risk groups:
* Democrat Josh Stein has beaten self-avowed Nazi Mark Robinson to become governor of North Carolina:
That’s everything I know off the top of my head. It’s not many bright spots, but it’s not zero. I’m going to try to find more and I’ll add them to the post. It’s the only thing I can think of to do that isn’t sobbing and throwing up or looking up Canadian immigration rules.
If you know more good news, I encourage you to add it in reblogs.
* Nevada has amended their constitution to guarantee abortion rights, overturning a state ban:
* Colorado has passed amendment 79, guaranteeing the right to an abortion, with more than a 20 point spread between the Yes and No vote:
* Maryland Question 1, also focused on reproductive rights and abortion, has passed as well: https://www.cnn.com/election/2024/results/maryland/issue-1
* Likewise, Amendment 3 has passed in Missouri, overturning a near-total ban to add reproductive rights to the state constitution:
* Arizona Proposition 139 to protect abortion rights also passed:
Every glimmer helps.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
* New Jersey has elected the first Korean-American senator in history:
I hope none of you disappear in the coming days. Seriously don’t do anything that can’t be undone.
I know i’m just a random person you follow online but I mean it. People (all kinds of marginalised people too!) Have survived all types of horrible times and managed to find happiness eventually. If for no one else, survive for them. And also, try to survive because the people making you despair don’t want you to live. Don’t give this to them. Don’t give your life. The best thing you can do is cling to it with everything you’ve got. Lay in bed for a day if you have to. but please promise you won’t hurt yourself.
Take screen breaks, (now more than ever!!) Meet up, Call your friends, call your family if you’re on good terms. Spend time with pets. Text your favourite mutual you never speak to if you’ve got no one irl. Hell, log on a minecraft server if nothing else. Or rewatch your favourite show.
Make sure you eat enough and sleep enough, and take the meds and vitamins that you need. Don’t believe anything you think if you’re hungry and tired and have been scrolling too long.
Get a therapy appointment if you think you need it.
You can absolutely not take any shortcuts when it comes to your wellbeing right now.
