This was so damn cool!! I loved the atmosphere of the entire piece — so cold, so clinical, practically bursting with icy shadows that lurked underneath. We all knew something was coming, but when we reached that room, wow. The descriptions!! They were incredible! I got chills. Thank you for making this game!!!

Variables. So many variables. This game takes into account every possible reaction the MC might have to certain events, and it does its damned best to represent it in the game. It doesn't force you to rush against time, grinding stats and relationship points. Bastard of Camelot lets your MC grow with the story. The ones you hate may eventually become the ones most dear to you; the convictions you hold may gradually become a source of doubt. Trust can be broken and hurting yet perserving love can remain. Humans are so rarely straightforward or linear when it comes to their emotions and actions, and BoC does its best to reflect that. Just thinking of all the coding that must have been put into these variations is making my head hurt, but!! I am very grateful!! The amount of character development and personality depth the game allows your MC to have is, quite frankly, insane. And I'm enjoying it very very much!
A staggering amount of personality variations that allows you to cook up the most complex and interesting MCs your little heart could ever dream of. Angry Wet Cat (read: tsundere) options are very much available and readily received by the world within the game, so one can live their tsundere MC dreams to the fullest without having to worry about getting 34785 negative relationship points along the way. MCs intent on being the meanest, most ruthless piece of ice in the general vicinity are also welcomed.
Favorability meters? Relationship points? They don't exist here. Choices actually bounce off of non-MC characters to create interesting relationship dynamics instead of kicking you into Route Lock Jail. Unless you say something that's extremely opposed to their core morals, you're fine. The game won't kick you out for being mean, promise <3 Go wild with the variables. Be free.
And, no. You don't get negative relationship points for refusing a piece of bread. There are no relationship points. The game tracks the attitudes, opinions, and actions you express to the characters and bounces off of that. Refuse that bread. They won't mind. This is a safe space for bread haters. More bread for me, at least 😌🍞✨
— (If I sound a bit unhinged, I'm sorry <//3 this is a personal blurb I wrote for Uroboros while I was working on making actual different collections for my beloved IF games instead of tossing them all into one collection 💀 I figured I should post it here as well.)
I loved it!! I read it all in one sitting, and while my eyes are sort of killing me, it was worth it. 😌💖 The writing is incredibly immersive, all the characters (including the Operative) immensely vivid and complex — which can make their interactions/relationships with each other both fascinating and frustrating.
MILD SPOILER warning (mostly an analysis of the Operative as a character tbh). Also. Very, very long comment. 🥹✨
I really like the pacing of Operative's relationships with the other characters. While most, if not all of them have a rocky start, you can practically feel their relationships slowly evolving over the course of story. Impressions shifting or reaffirming, hostility turning into fondness, or indifference turning into hostility. The subtle shifts in the undercurrents of the characters' relationships with each other feel really natural — at times, rewarding — and I enjoyed exploring them very much 💐
This game has a way of pulling you into its narrative — a way of subtly wrapping you up in a burrito blanket of the Operative's mind. I normally play IF games from an omniscient perspective. The emotions of my MC are usually kept separate from my own, though I do try to nudge them into ✨healthier✨choices. Despite that, even I had a difficult time extricating myself from the Operative's narrative — which, I must say, is all thanks to the incredible writing within the game. I felt the Operative's frustration. I felt their pain, their anger, and their instability. I felt their exhaustion. Their bitterness. Numerous complex emotions intensified by the trauma they had just experienced, and had not had time to process or heal from.
The Operative is not a blank slate. I understood that from the very first chapter. From the very beginning, they are shown — even stated — to be impulsive and arrogant. They're not completely open about their emotions, often preferring to deny they exist rather than processing them. To put it simply, they're not one for introspection. They're also very allergic to showing vulnerability or anything that could be perceived as weakness. The prologue served to show us how our Operative normally is when in... more carefree, more familiar conditions. When they still felt invincible. When they still had IVI. When IVI was taken, they lost both a friend and a piece of their metaphorical armor. As of chapter 4, most of the Operative's thoughts and actions seem to be driven by the trauma and emotions that they haven't had room to address. They're cooped up in a ship that's steadily losing power and they're stuck with the very person who had stolen something they held dear through inexcusably horrific means. Basically, they're in a very, very bad place mentally.
(Sidenote: that was not a dismissal of Rohan's value as a character. I find xem fascinating. I could gush a whole paragraph of everything I love about Rohan's relationship with the Operative but I'll spare you from that 😔💖 )
As I followed the Operative through the story, I often had to remind myself that what the Operative was saying and perceiving did not encapsulate the bigger picture of the situation — nor was it supposed to. The Operative is very much an unreliable and extremely traumatized narrator who has just had their entire world upended. And to most of the people (and aliens) on the ship, the Operative is a heavily wounded, potentially dangerous, and slightly(?) unstable person who is clearly familiar with death and danger — one that they've only known for a week at most.
(My Operative is at 12% health. Send Help)
I'm very, very fond of the Operative — especially the one that emerged from my first playthrough! They're actually my favorite character :D They're my poor traumatized slightly manic little darling alright I'll stop But as stated in the game's description:
- Participate in a character-driven story, with an emphasis on relationship-building and character growth
This game places a heavy emphasis on character growth and relationships — including the growth of the Operative as a character. It's perfectly understandable to be protective of your Operative! In fact, I think it makes the experience all the more impactful. I really think that the author did an incredible job of portraying the delicate, tenuous nature unique to bonds formed under less than stellar circumstances. Most of the characters don't trust the Operative, not yet — and the Operative may not necessarily trust them either. It's a slow process. They've only known each other for a week. A week filled with tension, anxiety, and pent-up trauma. It will take time.
The game takes its time with forming relationships. Slowly, gradually, like clouds passing over a moon. The tentative beginnings of trust, the cautious camarederie, and maybe the hesitant appearance of the tiniest piece of vulnerability... well. This game takes such a unique approach to relationship building, and it's been a wonderful — albeit Stressful, but hey, that's part of the fun — experience. I can't wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds.
If you've somehow read this far, then thank you! Thank you very much!! My apologies for such a monstrously long comment, but after seeing some recent discussions regarding this topic I wanted to throw in my own two cents ^^ If this comment is too long for an itch.io comment section, then I'm really sorry — I'm not well-versed in the unspoken rules and etiquette of this site. :') Please inform me if this comment is inappropriate, and I'll immediately take it down!!
And, finally, for the wonderful dev of this game: thank you so much for sharing such an intricate and complex story with us!! I really enjoyed playing through it, churning roller coaster of emotions and all. I can't wait to see how the rest of it unfolds 🥹✨ thank you, and once again, please inform me if I crossed a line!!
Beautiful, beautiful game. The visuals, the writing, the characters — so many aspects of this game come together to create an incredibly immersive experience. The amount of variations available for the player are insane, and makes so much room for you to create complex and vivid MCs. 5 stars, 10/10, and I hope new readers will have as much fun as I am!
Alright phew as an [redacted] romancer who went into this game completely blind, that was one hell of a roller coaster!! That twist at the end of episode 3? Gobsmacked. Utterly dumbfounded. I was just as dumbstruck as my MC. Am I complaining, though? Not at all — on the contrary, I'm very excited. That twist alone made this IF shoot up to be one of my favorite IFs. Very, very excited to see where this goes!! I'm all in for [redacted], so this is going to be a very very interesting ride that may or may not end in heartbreak, but — we'll see :DDD Amazing game, I highly recommend it <3
Aaaah, this is so cool! I'm really interested in the story, and the art? Gorgeous. I'm really happy to see that you guys are still working on the game, judging by your comment on this page less than an hour ago. Take all the time you need! Just knowing that this game is still being worked on is enough (。^▽^)
I'm horribily enamoured with D. It's humiliating. I'd give him the world. Maybe the stars, too. Embarrassing. Who said that. I'll be going now.
Thank you for all the work and time you put into creating this beautiful story, dev. I pushed a bunch of looming deadlines to the backburner for this, but it was worth it :)
Hello, just popping in! Your story was actually the first ever IF I played -- and I loved it! It was like a whole new world, a completely different form of story building and MC immersion I'd never known was possible before. And it was all for free!! After reading all your updated chapters, I immediately dove into the world of Interactive Fiction, squirreling away ever single one I could find. I've played through about 5 other IF pieces now, and I've loved every moment of it. I still keep coming back to this game, though -- it holds a special place in my heart as the first piece of IF I ever played, and I'll always hold out that it'll be completed, one day.
If you don't want to go back to this story anymore, then that's completely alright. But I just wanted to give my thanks for creating this story -- for creating it so well, that I went through every page(?) with a rising, giddy, wave of euphoria in my chest. I'm glad this was my first peek into the Interactive Fiction world. Wherever you are, whatever you're doing now, I hope that you thrive. I hope you live well. Truly. Thank you. :)
