The deviant conducts practiced by teenagers are seen as behaviors that go against social norms and order, even though they are configured as a very harsh reality in several countries, both from specialists’ research and according to statistics. The present paper aims at assessing the empiric validity of the factor structure of the Scale of Anti-Social and Criminal Conduct (SCS) in different countries. It is an assessment measure of the deviant conducts that has been frequently used with different samples and which can be seen as conducts that interfere in people’s rights and duties and threaten their social and individual welfare. The study encompassed 411 teenagers, that is, 137 in each country, with ages ranging from 13 to 18 (M = 15.71; DP = 1,65; Mo = 15). The results show that the SCS factor structure was consistent. They also confirmed the bi-factor organization of such measure seen in Brazilian studies. Moreover, their factor invariance stands out in samples from the countrie...

This paper aims to present and discuss the results of a qualitative study conducted in the city of Porto, Portugal, aiming to understand the self-determination process and the meanings and impacts of sex work on trans women’s body self-image and health. Between January and July 2019, six individual interviews were performed with participants aged between 23 and 57 and then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results suggest that the participants were subjected to several experiences of discrimination and violence since childhood, negatively impacting their health and social integration. In their narratives, a conflict between the idea of an idealized body, congruent with gender identity, and the idea of a profitable body, compatible with the requirements of sex work clients, emerged. As a consequence, several tensions are experienced, both in personal and professional domains. Additionally, the difficulties felt in accessing the National Health System, to receive specialized suppo...

This study aims to understand the intimate experiences of immigrant Brazilian women living in Portugal, and also to characterize possible victimization experiences in their intimate relationships. The empirical base was constituted by 114 immigrant women, and the results show that the intimate experiences of these women are marked by violence episodes both in Portugal and in Brazil. The most frequent types of violence were psychological and verbal violence, with these practices occurring more than once in their intimate relationships. When experiencing violence episodes, these women do not seek help and do not file a formal complaint, which legitimizes and reinforces the victimization to which they are subjected. This study intends to contribute to the development of action strategies that lead to the real protection of immigrant victims and to challenge the greater risk that immigration can entail in the lives of immigrant women, especially for victims of intimate violence.

Bullying and cyberbullying victimization are significant factors that threaten adolescent development and mental health. Our study aimed to analyze how socioeconomic characteristics and personal experiences of violence are associated with adolescents’ experiences of bullying and cyberbullying victimization. The study participants were 1146 students, 698 females and 448 males, aged between 13 and 16 years old, from secondary schools in Spain, Italy, Romania, Portugal, Poland and the UK. Data was collected through an online questionnaire. Prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated using Poisson regression with robust variance. In total, 37.2% of girls and 35.0% of boys reported being victims of bullying and or cyberbullying. The likelihood of bullying and or cyberbullying victimization was higher when adolescents had experienced physical and or sexual abuse before the age of 15, had witnessed domestic violence against their mother or had been victims of intimate partner violence. Perceive...

Despite the efforts of recent decades to reduce gender inequality, sexism is still prevalent among adolescents. The objective of this study was to identify the main socioeconomic characteristics, personal experiences, resources, and competencies associated with sexism in a sample of adolescents from different European countries. Baseline data from the Lights4Violence project included 1555 students ages 12–17 from secondary schools in six European countries (Spain, Italy, Romania, United Kingdom, Portugal, and Poland). Linear regression models were carried out, stratified by sex for benevolent (BS) and hostile (HS) dimensions of the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory. The average age of the sample was 14.3 years (SD = 1.5), 59.3% were girls. Boys scored higher on the measure of sexism (mean BS = 29.7; HS = 29.1) than girls (BS = 27.5, HS = 23.0; p < .001). Girls whose mothers had a university degree reported lower BS (β = −0.113; p = .023) (reference: lower education). Girls who had expe...

Portugal lived under a dictatorial, fascist regime, from May 28 th 1926 up until April 25 th 1974. Since the Republic, in 1910, Portugal went through a period of political, economical and social disturbances, with the successive falls of governments and a perilous financial situation, which was aggravated with the participation in World War I. In 1928, António de Oliveira Salazar enters the political stage as Minister of Finances. Introducing politics of austerity, Salazar manages to balance the country‟s financial-economical situation and builds an image of a powerful statesman. This image and his influence led to the approval of the new Constitution, which would set up the regime of the “New State”. 1933 Constitution reinforces an authoritarian regime that prohibits political parties and strikes, establishes censorship and raises the political police office (PIDE International and State Defense Police). These measures embodied a repressive state, whose main tools of domination wer...

In the last two decades, the problem of violence in the family sphere in particular and in intimate relationships in general has been on the agenda for Portuguese governmental and nongovernmental agencies. Several initiatives and campaigns have been launched, which are aimed at reducing occurrence of this violence, particularly among teenagers. This present study aims to assess the evolution in adolescents' attitudes and behaviors concerning intimate partner violence. We collected data from a sample of adolescents (n = 913) to compare with corresponding data collected 7 years ago by Neves and Nogueira (2010) in a sample that had identical sociodemographic characteristics (n = 899). Both cohorts resided in the same areas in the northeastern region of Portugal. The instruments used were the Scale of Beliefs about Marital Violence (ECVC) and the Marital Violence Inventory (IVC; Neves & Nogueira, 2010). The results indicate that although respondents tend to reject traditional belief...

Self-esteem seems to be a crucial factor in adolescents’ psychological well-being. Our study aimed to identify the likelihood of high/medium/low adolescents’ self-esteem in personal experiences of abuse and/or violence (abuse by an adult in childhood, bullying and cyberbullying, and dating violence victimization), different socioeconomic characteristics, perceived social support, and ability to resolve social problems. The study participants were 1451 students from secondary schools (age 13–16) in Spain, Italy, Romania, Portugal, Poland and the UK. We calculated relative risk ratios using multinomial regression models to understand how socioeconomic characteristics, personal experiences of abuse and/or violence, perceived social support, ability to resolve social problems were associated with a self-esteem level. Having no experience of being a victim of physical and sexual abuse in childhood and not being a victim of bullying and cyberbullying is connected with the likelihood of hi...

Multidisciplinary research in the area of female crime and delinquency has increasingly focused on transgressive girls and women. Despite this, discussions on the link between gender and crime or delinquency still have a long way to go. In order to explore critically and reflectively the interdisciplinary views on this link, favouring a gender-sensitive reading, we proposed this book. Through the exploration of girls’ and women’s relationships with delinquency and crime, as well as with the justice system, our goal is to highlight the heterogeneity of girls’ and women’s experiences, while debating convergences and divergences between them. While obviously not ignoring international studies on the phenomena, the discussion produced here is focused on the Portuguese context, giving visibility to other geographies in scientific investigation.
