After my appointment as adjunct archaeologist at the Greek Ministry of Culture, I was Researcher and Assistant to the Director at the Benaki Museum between 2002 and 2013 and from 2014 I moved to the Ionian University in Corfu where I teach, as Associate Professor, a range of courses in cultural heritage management, with a focus on archaeology. My research concerns also topics on Roman sculpture and Roman Greece, and the importance of Greek sanctuaries, as well as managing archaeological sites, public archaeology and cultural heritage. I am the Director of the “Amykles Research Project” and the Director of the Ionian University Museum. I am a member of the Athens Archaeological Society, the German Archaeological Institute, the scientific committee of the Athens “Roman Seminar” and of the ICOM.edit

This paper is intertwining the technology, education and public archaeology sectors in a case study approach of the archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Amyklaion, an important center of human activity in ancient Sparta, Greece. The creation of an innovative digital platform for the development of educational applications focused on cultural heritage tourism with the use of extended reality and gamification elements is presented. The applications are designed to be managed by a central documentation platform in a 3D environment produced by the digitization of the archaeological site, the excavation and archaeological finds. The main goal in the creation of this platform is to enhance the experiential learning of visitors of the archaeological site and the involvement of communities in the production and consumption of knowledge through new media, using educational methodologies and a human-centered ambient intelligence approach.

Since E.L. Bowie’s seminal article on the Greeks and their past in the Second Sophistic, the study of Greece in the Roman Empire has been experiencing what has been described in other areas of social sciences and the humanities as a ‘mnemonic turn’. The purpose of this article is to rethink the role and scope of these approaches by revisiting some of their assumptions and by posing a series of related questions: was the Roman conquest a catalyst for the emergence of phenomena of mobilization of the past in Greek societies? If such phenomena articulated conscious local responses to the imperial situation, how uniform were these responses across the Greek mainland? Were Greeks unique in this respect compared to other provincial societies across the empire? Did every use and representation of the past always have an ideological significance that can be read from the available textual and material evidence? Can we classify and describe all these phenomena by using the ‘language of memor...

The aim of this study is to present the documentation results of the archaeological site of Amykles in Sparta, Greece using different types of geodetic techniques. The site of Amykles includes a large number of important findings. For the documentation of the site, data from land surveys (total station surveying, Global Navigation Satellite Systems -GNSS surveying), terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), and aerial digital images from UAV are collected in two different epochs (2015 and 2017). The data are georeferenced into a common reference system. From the data, digital surface models of the archaeological site are produced and a geometrical comparison of the surface models is made in order to establish the progress of the excavations. The paper describes the methodology followed for the data collection and data processing pipeline and discusses on the practical aspects and difficulties for such types of documentation projects and reports on the produced results.

Cultural tourism is a fast-growing industry, which attracts the interest of both local and global economic and social players. One aspect of cultural tourism is that of offering cultural routes to visitors in order to enable them better explore the cultural heritage of a region and most importantly to experience a complete cultural visit to a place of interest. In this paper, we address the design of cultural routes in the municipality of Sparta, Greece, and we propose a methodology for achieving this goal. The municipality of Sparta was selected because it demonstrates three special characteristics: (i) a rich and widely-recognized cultural heritage, (ii) a location surrounded by a unique natural environment and (iii) a constantly evolving touristic and cultural interest that was triggered by the world economic growth after the crisis of the period 2008 to 2012. The novelty of our method for designing cultural routes lies in the fact that it places the museum at the core of the route network; empowering thus the former to act as a liaison between history and knowledge, visitors, the local communities and the global economy. In other words, the museum and the educational aspect becomes the reference point for every visitor by providing informative and personalized material with respect to the available routes, the quests associated with specialized visits and the underlying relation between tourism and cultural heritage.

Imitating or modifying cult statues in Roman times was controlled by religious needs, not by the intention to copy and preserve the true stylistic forms of particular art works. The imperial art production of the seated Zeus in the east of the Roman Empire was influenced by the Pheidian Zeus and the cult statue of Jupiter Optimus Maximus Capitolinus. However, through these two works the Roman sculptors adopted principally an idea, an iconographic theme, which could be used for the representation of the god in various circumstances. The significance of the Pheidian iconography of Zeus, in particular, was generated by the potency and the universality of this image. This is evident in the Roman representations with a cultic as well as a decorative function. Both ›models‹ affected the iconographic, typological and philosophical characteristics of the reproductions in Asia Minor during the imperial period. Needless to say, there are particularities depending on the regional focus of the presentation and the narrative repertoire, identity and ideological issues, as well as the setting of the proposed Zeus image.

This contribution focuses on the upper torso of a seated statue of a bearded man that is preserved from the neck to the thighs and is located in the Archaeological Museum of Neapolis (Laconia). The research and the identification of the sculpture is difficult because the torso was handed over to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lakonia by an individual without detailed information regarding the location and the time of its discovery. The torso can be dated to the middle of the 2nd century A. D., and the statue type can be traced back to an original fitting into the Hellenistic art of the 3rd and 2nd centuries B. C. It is probably the cult statue of the main deity in the temple of Asclepius and Hygeia in Etis, Laconia, because of its origin from the wider Neapolis region and the identification of this particular sanctuary by Pausanias (3, 22, 13). It
was part of a systematic attempt by the elite of the 2nd c. A. D. to revive cults from the past with the subsequent reconstruction of the natural form of a sanctuary, an enterprise inspired by the Second Sophistic.

The standing figure of a naked youth of the early third century AD, found near the city of Gytheion and now kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (no 2779), is one of the few examples of theomorphic depictions of a mortal in Greece. It is a portrait statue of a mortal in the guise of Dionysos, as is evident from the ivy wreath, the kantharos in his right hand and the panther on his left. The statue is a variant of a sculptural type of the god, for which the model, even though it cannot be precisely identified, is connected with the fourth century BC and the sculptor Praxiteles. The custom, whereby members of a family were compared after death with deities, prevailed in the Western part of the Roman Empire, and particularly in Rome, from as early as the mid-first century AD and above all in the second and third centuries. In these cases, some of the most popular iconographic types of deities were selected, in order to portray certain characteristics and attributes of the dead. By contrast in Greece, with the exception of Macedonia, this kind of theomorphic depiction is seldom found. This phenomenon, which is known as “apotheosis” (or deification), has been extensively studied by H. Wrede and subsequently by other scholars. As a result of their research, the true content of the term was clarified, showing that it is not a real “apotheosis” but rather a form of iconographic parallelism. Ιt can be claimed that, even if theomorphic depiction is not generally related to the social status of the dead, the Gytheion example could be associated
with an upper-class milieu in Lakonia due to its type, a free standing statue, as also because of the rarity of such representations in the southern Greek area.

The current article is the first publication of a life-size portrait head of a young, bearded man stored in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. It portrays an upper-class citizen and official. Unfortunately, there is no information about the portrait’s origin. It is also noteworthy that there is no reference to this work, either by Paul Graindor and Elena Lattanzi, who both conducted research on Kosmetes, or by Alcmene Datsouli-Stavridis, who studied and published data on the Museum’s portraits. The bust is comparable to works of the Hadrianic era in terms of the plasticity of the curls, their increasing volume above the forehead and the correlation between face and hair. Furthermore, the absence of a pupil or iris in the eye indicates that the work should not be dated after the decade 120-130 AD. A thorough inspection of the portrait’s workmanship and the fact that it is made of Pentelic marble demonstrate that it was created by an Attic-Athenian workshop. The sort of sculpture with which the portrait head can best be compared is that of some young Athenian, probably standing and dressed in a himation, from the time of Hadrian. The statue is likely to have been placed in a stoa, a columnar facade or niche of a public building, i.e. a position that accentuated the subject’s relationship with the classical tradition of Athens, but most importantly it promoted commitment and dedication to the emperor.

The following is a summary and provisional account of these presentations. Much of the material and data is presented here for the first time. Architecture and geometric pottery retain pride of place in this publication. New evidence from the Mycenaean era throws light on the first open air sanctuary. Information and analysis regarding the provenance of the building material and quarries are here collected for the first time. Of particular importance concerning the history of religion is the reexamination of the testimonia shedding light on the early cults of Hyakinthos and Apollo. Various methodological approaches, possibilities and limitations of the readability were discussed in detail, as well as jointly discoursed questions of possible relationships and interactions with other sanctuaries.
