El artículo describe un proyecto de innovación educativa realizado con la colaboración internacio... more El artículo describe un proyecto de innovación educativa realizado con la colaboración internacional de dos instituciones académicas al servicio de la sociedad. En este proyecto RENATA y UPV/EHU colaboran en la introducción del Pensamiento Computacional en las escuelas de Colombia. Para ello ambas instituciones, con el apoyo del MINTIC y MINEDUCACIÓN, han creado un ecosistema educativo basado en tres elementos básicos: la tecnología (educativa, comunicaciones e información), el equipo humano (los estudiantes y los maestros), las instituciones (gubernamentales y académicas). La primera parte del artículo incluye una reflexión integral sobre los conceptos relativos al término 'Pensamiento Computacional'. A continuación, se discuten los beneficios potenciales del uso de un entorno de aprendizaje virtual para incorporar el Pensamiento Computacional en el aula, y se describe el papel que juegan las instituciones en la creación de soluciones innovadoras al servicio de los sistemas educativos nacionales. El artículo continúa describiendo la primera materialización de la colaboración internacional RENATA-UPV/EHU a través del curso denominado ‘PC-01: Introducción al Pensamiento Computacional’. El curso introduce los "conceptos" y "procesos" básicos de Pensamiento Computacional ayudado por el entorno de programación visual Scratch. El curso está diseñado para ser impartido por el maestro con el apoyo de una plataforma de aprendizaje. Esta plataforma se basa en Moodle y está configurada para proporcionar innovadoras estrategias pedagógicas basadas en tecnologías educativas emergentes. Se detallan los programas y las evaluaciones basadas en test y proyectos Scratch con revisión por pares. Y concluye con una descripción completa del impacto de este curso en las instituciones educativas, en los docentes y en los estudiantes.

This article reviews: some of the major changes is online access to higher education around the world; the fundamental ideas that cognitive sciences and computation are advancing for a new educational system; and a set of specific examples where this access and these methodologies are being implemented in the real world.

— A critical set of advances in the world of cognitive sciences during the last two decades is re... more — A critical set of advances in the world of cognitive sciences during the last two decades is redefining the directions of research of cognitive processes. A set of obsolete cognitive principles has been identified and new methods and objectives have been set for the study of complex problems. We investigate in this paper one such problem in an experiment with students (n=192) from four universities in Spain. The experiment reveals that (i) students easily and reliably acquire (appropriately designed) complex algorithms and (ii) students learn and apply these algorithms in an affective state of ease. These students systematically outperformed published results in an isomorphic task (inheritance genetics). These results indicate that appropriate data encoding, explicit algorithmic definition, and the activation of human cognitive primitives is sufficient to accomplish the task.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to p... more The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict, on the basis of clinical variables, the response of persons with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) to a standard, 4-week interdisciplinary pain program. The design of this study is retrospective longitudinal. Fibromyalgia outpatient clinic in a tertiary-care general hospital. The subjects of this study include outpatients with FMS. Multidisciplinary pain program including pain pharmacotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Reliable change (RC) of scores on the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), and accuracy of ANNs in predicting RC at discharge or at 6-month follow-up as compared to Logistic Regression. ANN-based models using the sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational subscales of the McGill Pain Questionnaire, the HAQ disability index, and the anxiety subscale of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale at baseline as input variables correctly classified 81.81% of responders at discharge and 83.33% of responders at 6-month follow-up, as well as 100% of nonresponders at either evaluation time-point. Logistic regression analysis, which was used for comparison, could predict treatment outcome with accuracies of 86.11% and 61.11% at discharge and follow-up, respectively, based on baseline scores on the HAQ and the mental summary component of the Medical Outcomes Study-Short Form 36. Properly trained ANNs can be a useful tool for optimal treatment selection at an early stage after diagnosis, thus contributing to minimize the lag until symptom amelioration and improving tertiary prevention in patients with FMS.

It describes the need, purpose and main features of Computational Thinking. It describes with several examples how to develop the key elements of Computational Thinking using a programming language. The last section of the paper shows the content and outcomes of the course "Computational Thinking in School" taught as a MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) in the platform Miríada X.

This article presents a new paradigm for the study of Math and Sciences curriculum during primary... more This article presents a new paradigm for the study of Math and Sciences curriculum during primary and secondary education. A workshop for Education undergraduates at four different campuses (n=242) was designed to introduce participants to the new paradigm. In order to make a qualitative analysis of the current school methodologies in mathematics, participants were introduced to a taxonomic tool for the description of K-12 Math problems. The tool allows the identification, decomposition and description of Type-A problems, the characteristic ones in the traditional curriculum, and of Type-B problems in the new paradigm. The workshops culminated with a set of surveys where participants were asked to assess both the current and the new proposed paradigms. The surveys in this study revealed that according to the majority of participants: (i) The K-12 Mathematics curricula are designed to teach students exclusively the resolution of Type-A problems; (ii) real life Math problems respond to a paradigm of Type-B problems; and (iii) the current Math curriculum should be modified to include this new paradigm.
