Asian and Oriental philosophy, art and religion offer perspectives for an alternative (non- Western) communication model and theory. Asian values of harmony, consensus through encounter and dialogue, complementarity, integration, and emphasis on wisdom instead of knowledge provide the cultural for the restructuring of the traditional Laswellian model of communication process. An indigenous model or theory should be able to capture the dynamics of development and the social, political, economic and cultural realities. It should also place emphasis on the unintended effects of communication as these have, in fact been more significant in their impact on social change. An alternative model should be community-oriented, or what Teheranian (1985) describes as "communitarian," representing an ideal Third World alternative response able to contain most of the values found in the concept of a desired future. It should also be user-oriented and is more attuned to the needs of individuals and groups in the community rather than with the needs of the larger institutions which are now being served by the present communication system. However, it recognizes the need to link the community with the center through small media and traditional community centers.

Due to continuing threats and attacks on the media, journalist safety has been the subject of increasing scholarly research in the Philippines. A gap in the literature, however, is research on safety issues affecting Filipino women journalists in particular, despite reports on specific challenges they face. In a country where not only women in media but females in general are subjected to catcalling, sexually offensive remarks, and harassment, there is a need for more focused research in order to bring such issues to public attention and propose relevant protection policies and mechanisms. This case study research reveals the types of threats and attacks Filipino women journalists experience, as well as their responses and policy recommendations for media owners and editorial managers.

Can there be still any doubt that mass media have radically and dramatically altered human experience? What impact does the near omnipresence of mass media have on cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral attributes of children? But even before we could completely and satisfactorily answer these two questions, new and perhaps more “insidious ” media technologies have emerged. Only in the past three decades, they have drastically changed our media landscape, or perhaps we refer to them more appropriately as media spacecape, referring to the emerging dominance of the digital media. Even though technological innovations occur more rapidly today “at the speed of a speeding bullet, ” the basic issue of media impact on child development remains a priority concern. The impact of child-media interaction on child development has been the favorite topic of many social science studies for decades. But a review of the findings of these studies seems to indicate that the only conclusion where...

    4. Several developments both at the global and local fronts are affecting the nature of relationships between cultures and religions. These include international agreements on cultural diversity and initiatives toward interfaith dialogue. On the other hand, there are developments that have exacerbated conflict or what is described as a “clash among civilizations.” These developments have not been adequately reported because of several factors – the nature of media ownership, commercialism, and the level of knowledge and attitudes among media practitioners. The latter refers to access to information on these issues, mindsets, and inadequate skills in handling issues that are culturally sensitive.

In the Philippines, the assault on the press has gone digital. While Filipino journalists continue to face physical, verbal, and legal threats and attacks, cyber-attacks and online harassment/trolling were identified in 2018 as the second worst threat against them, after low wages and poor working conditions, according to the International Federation of Journalists and the Southeast Asia Journalist Unions. Websites of news outlets have also been hacked and taken down. These challenges make the press vulnerable to self-censorship and may even lead to fatal outcomes. This chapter seeks to fill the gap in the literature on the digital types of assault on the Philippine alternative press, focusing on the experience of alternative news media outlets—independent media particularly critical of the government. It explores the range of such threats and attacks and the responses, legal frameworks, and remedies in place that are used to combat dangers of this nature.
