Chromosome numbers were counted in 126 new accessions of 50 Paspalum species from Brazil, Argenti... more Chromosome numbers were counted in 126 new accessions of 50 Paspalum species from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. The chromosome numbers 2n=12, 20, 24, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 were confirmed. Chromosome numbers for P. arenarium (2n=20), P. barretoi (2n=20), P. aff. ceresia (2n=40), P. corcovadense (2n=20), P. crispulum (2n=20), P. flaccidum (2n=40), P. nummularium (2n=20), P. scalare (2n=20), P. vescum (2n=20) and P. rectum (2n=20) and a diploid cytotype of P. malacophyllum are reported for the first time. The predominance of tetraploid accessions (43.6%) was confirmed, but an unusually high number of diploid species (44%) and accessions (35.7%) was found. These results open new perspectives for breeding programs, phylogenetic studies, and for research on apomixis control, since diploids of Paspalum are typically sexual.

Until recently, the basic chromosome number x = 8 was suggested for the Mesosetum genus, which wa... more Until recently, the basic chromosome number x = 8 was suggested for the Mesosetum genus, which was considered rare in the subtribe Arthropogoninae (Poaceae, Paspaleae). However, the number of accessions and species analysed is not large and the relation of chromosome numbers in this genus with others of the subtribe is uncertain. In this study, cytological and reproductive information in other species of Mesosetum was provided enabling a broad critical analysis of chromosomes evolution in the clade. Chromosome counting and meiotic behaviour profile were determined for six accessions of Mesosetum belonging to four different species. Mature embryo sac structure was determined to predict sexual or apomictic mode of reproduction. All accessions showed 2n = 8 chromosomes, number recorded for first time in Neotropical Poaceae and Paniceae s. l.. Chromosomes showed similar length and presence of one satellite pair in two perennial species. Meiosis was regular, with the formation of four bivalents whilst the embryo sacs were of Polygonum type. Although the basic chromosome number x = 10 appears to be plesiomorphic in Paspaleae tribe, current data indicate x = 4 as a possible additional number. These findings indicate that polyploidy could be involved in Mesosetum evolution and speciation.

In order to determine chromosome numbers and a possible correlation with some agronomic character... more In order to determine chromosome numbers and a possible correlation with some agronomic characteristics, accessions of the INTTAS (Iniciativa para la Investigacion y Transferencia de Tecnologia Agraria Sostenible, Chaco, Paraguay) seed-producing perennial D. eriantha germplasm collection were examined. The tetraploid level (2n = 36) was verified in 27 plants, 11 plants were diploid (2n = 18), 2 had 2n = 34 chromosomes, one 2n = 20 and in 3 plants possible accessory (B) chromosomes were detected. Meiotic behaviour was generally regular and percentage of viable pollen grains almost always exceeded 90% in all plants examined. No consistent correlations between phenotype or agronomic characters and chromosome numbers could be detected. However, 95% of the accessions originally collected from loamy soils were tetraploid or near tetraploid. This is the first report on meiosis for most of these taxa. Except for C. baccatum L. var praetermissum, C. chinense, C. flexuosum and C. parvifolium, with 2n 24 chromosomes, all other taxa had 2n 26 chromosomes, a number previously considered as not common in the genus. Meiotic pairing was generally regular (12 or 13 bivalents) for most of the species analyzed. This study aims the reproductive and DNA content characterization of ten different Paspalum speci... more This study aims the reproductive and DNA content characterization of ten different Paspalum species from the Plicatula group (P. atratum, P. compressifolium, P. guenoarum, P. lenticulare, P. lepton, P. oteroi, P. plicatulum, P. rhodopedum, P. rojasii and P. wrightii), contributing to the determination of the best breeding and conservation method to be used. The DNA content of 150 accessions was estimated by flow cytometry using foliar tissues. The reproductive mode of 135 accessions was characterized by flow cytometric seed screening, and five accessions were determined by cytoembryological ovary analysis. DNA content ranged from 1.50 pg (BGP 380) to 4.27 pg (BGP 193), both from P. compressifolium species. Esta tecnica e amplamente utilizada em plantas, principalmente em estudos do sistema vascular foliar e de flores, auxiliando neste ultimo, a determinacao do tipo de saco embrionario presente nos ovarios. Isto permite de forma rapida, correlacionar o tipo destas estruturas ao modo de reproducao de diferentes especies de plantas, incluindo gramineas.
