In recent years new high speed railroad cars have been developed. In these systems, a considerable number of mechanical failures have been reported for different components of the braking system with a large percentage corresponding to the hake beams. In this paper, considerations and results regarding the ground vibration track induced contributions to the fatigue failure of brake beams are

The atrophy of skeletal muscles in patients with Krabbe disease is a major debilitating manifestation that worsens their quality of life and limits the clinical efficacy of current therapies. The pathogenic mechanism triggering muscle wasting is unknown. This study examined structural, functional, and metabolic changes conducive to muscle degeneration in Krabbe disease using the murine (twitcher mouse) and canine [globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD) dog] models. Muscle degeneration, denervation, neuromuscular [neuromuscular junction (NMJ)] abnormalities, and axonal death were investigated using the reporter transgenic twitcher-Thy1.1-yellow fluorescent protein mouse. We found that mutant muscles had significant numbers of smaller-sized muscle fibers, without signs of regeneration. Muscle growth was slow and weak in twitcher mice, with decreased maximum force. The NMJ had significant levels of activated caspase-3 but limited denervation. Mutant NMJ showed reduced surface areas and lowe...

Identifying genetically and phenotypically distinct populations of threatened species is critical if we are to delineate appropriate plans for their conservation. We conducted an integrated analysis of population genetic structure, historical demographic events, current gene flow (all based on mtDNA sequences) and morphological variation of three geographically separated groups of populations of Dupont's lark Chersophilus duponti, located in the Iberian Peninsula (three populations), Morocco (two populations), and Tunisia (one population). Unusually, this lark species is the only one among the genus Chersophilus. Our results revealed the early historical divergence of an eastern Dupont's lark lineage (in Tunisia) and a western lineage (in Morocco and Spain), consistent with subspecies taxonomy and distribution. The western lineage subsequently split into two lineages, following the isolation of Iberian and African populations. Such pattern of historical differentiation cause...

ABSTRACT The design of complex fusion systems requires experimental analysis, following the classical structure of experiment design, data acquisition, experiment execution and analysis of the obtained results. We present here a framework with simulation capabilities for sensor fusion in aerial vehicles. Thanks to its abstraction level it only requires a few high level properties for defining a whole experiment. Its modular design offers flexibility and makes easy to complete its functionality. Finally, it includes a set of tools for fast development and more accurate analysis of the experimental results.

This paper describes a novel methodology for the adaptive management of radar systems or radar networks used for air traffic control. It is based on linking radar tracking system overall resources consumption with air traffic control operational requirements. The method is exemplified with the design of a tracking function for a multifunction ESA radar. Some simulation results for this system

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can be differentiated into myocytes, as well as adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteocytes in culture. Calcium channels mediate excitation-contraction coupling and are essential for the function of muscle. However, little is known about the expression of calcium channel subunits and calcium handling in stem cells. We examined whether the expression of calcium channel subunits in MSC is similar to that of skeletal muscle satellite cells and if their levels of expression are modified after treatment with bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP4). We found that during myogenic differentiation, MSC first express the α2δ1 subunit and the cardiac channel subunit Cav1.2. In contrast to the α2δ1 subunit levels, the Cav1.2 subunit decreases rapidly with time. The skeletal channel subunit Cav1.1 is detected at day 3 but its expression increases considerably, resembling more closely the expression of the subunits in satellite cells. Treatment of MSC with BMP4 caused a significant increase in expression of Cav1.2, a delay in expression of Cav1.1, and a reduction in the duration of calcium transients when extracellular calcium was removed. Calcium currents and transients followed a pattern related to the expression of the cardiac (Cav1.2) or skeletal (Cav1.1) α1subunits. These results indicate that differentiation of untreated MSC resembles differentiation of skeletal muscle and that BMP4 reduces skeletal muscle calcium channel expression and promotes the expression of cardiac calcium channels during myogenic differentiation.

This has caused that their remote interoperability is neither easy nor efficient as demonstrated by the fact that the simultaneous query to multiple databases is presently done, most of the times, by hand.

This paper presents a new approach for trajectory segmentation in the area of Air Traffic Control, as a basic tool for offline validation with recorded opportunity traffic data. Our approach uses local information to classify each measurement individually, constructing the final segments over these classified samples as the final solution of the process. This local classification is based on a

During the last years ontology-based applications have been thought without taking in account their limitations in terms of upgradeability. In parallel, new capabilities such as topological sorting of instances with spatial characteristics have been developed. Both facts may lead to a collapse in the operational capacity of this kind of applications. This paper presents an ontology-centric architecture to solve the

In this work we perform the first test of a stellar spectral classification method (Stock & Stock 1999) by applying it to early type stars. The sample of stars are the members of the open cluster IC 2391 that have high-resolution spectra available in the UVES Project of Paranal Observatory. We show that, in general, absolute magnitudes M_V and intrinsic colors (B-V)_0 can be recovered within the uncertainties stated in the original calibration (˜ 0.4 for the magnitudes and ˜ 0.03 for the colors). This accuracy allows us to estimate distances and to infer membership of individual stars to obtain an average distance to the cluster of 156+/-24 pc, which is in good agreement with previously reported determinations. Finally, we identify and discuss the real strengths and limitations of this method and we suggest how it can be improved for future studies.
