This paper provides an overview of low-level features for speaker recognition, with an emphasis o... more This paper provides an overview of low-level features for speaker recognition, with an emphasis on the recently proposed MFCC variant based on asymmetric tapers (MFCC asymmetric from now on); which has proven high noise robustness in the context of speaker verification. Using the TIMIT corpus the performance of the MFCC-asymmetric is compared with: the standard Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and The Linear Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (LFCC) under clean and noisy environments. To simulate real world conditions, the verification phase was tested with two noises (babble and factory) at different Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNR) issued from NOISEX-92 database. The experimental results showed that MFCCs-asymmetric tapers (k=4) outperform other features in noisy condition. Finally, we have investigated the impact of consolidating evidences from different features by score level fusion. Preliminary results show promising improvement on verification rate with score fusion.

In this paper we present a novel feature extraction algorithm based on multitaper and Gammatone f... more In this paper we present a novel feature extraction algorithm based on multitaper and Gammatone filters for robust speaker verification systems in mismatched noisy conditions encountered in realistic conditions. The idea is to couple the advantage of the low variance multitaper short term spectral estimators with the noise robustness of the auditory Gammatone filterbanks. Experimental results on the TIMIT corpus, with mismatched environment and low signal to noise ratios (SNR) levels, show that the proposed Multitaper Gammatone Cepstral Coefficient (MGCC) features outperform largely the conventional Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC). Furthermore, and interestingly the MGCC features outperforms at almost all the operating signal to noise ratios the recently proposed Gammatone Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (GFCC) under white, babble and factory noises. This gain in performance is obtained with both the GMM-UBM baseline and the state-of -the art I-vector speaker verification systems.

Nowadays, under controlled conditions the speaker verification systems based on the GMM-UBM parad... more Nowadays, under controlled conditions the speaker verification systems based on the GMM-UBM paradigm show very good performance. However, in forensic investigation activities the conditions; in which recordings are acquired; are uncontrollable, a naive use of the baseline GMM-UBM system without feature normalization, model transformation and score normalization techniques yields to unreliable forensic reporting. In this paper, we investigate forensic reporting using corpus-based likelihood ratio evaluation; which gained popularity in recent years; using two state-of-the-art speaker recognition systems: The JFA system which models explicitly the speaker and session variability during training stage and the I-vector paradigm which models the total variability and use compensation techniques to handle session mismatch. The GMM-UBM, Joint Factor Analysis and I-vector systems are compared in verification performance using Half Total Error Rates (HTER) and in forensic reporting using TIPPET plots. Experimental results on an Algerian Arabic dialect under different telephonic recording conditions confirm the robustness of I-vector and JFA systems in handling cross-channel mismatch and highlight clearly the drastic deterioration of the performance of the GMM-UBM system.

Motivated by recent advances in speech and audio processing community reporting that incorporatin... more Motivated by recent advances in speech and audio processing community reporting that incorporating the phase information can improve further the performance of state-of-the-art phase-independent features. We propose in this paper a modification in the extraction pipeline of the Mel-frequency Product Spectrum Cepstral Coefficients MFPSCC which warp the product spectrum with a Mel- Scale filterbank. The main novelty of this work resides in incorporating a Gammatone filterbank as a substitute of the Mel filterbank to reinforce the robustness of whole speaker verification system in noisy conditions. The proposed feature is dubbed the Gammatone Product-Spectrum Cepstral coefficients GPSCC. Experimental results are undertaken on the TIMIT corpus corrupted by different stationary and non-stationary noises using the GMMUBM de facto standard for speaker verification. Performance evaluations demonstrate drastic reduction in Equal Error Rates when using GPSCC compared to other related features and this gain in performance is more pronounced at low signal to noise ratios.
