In this research, combined 2D electrical resistivity and self-potential (SP) methods were employed to locate anomalous electrical conductivity around the Goronyo dam in order to determine the condition of the embankment of the earth dam. The data were taken with the reference to resistivity and SP values using Wenner configuration. The results obtained from these techniques shows that the area was underlain by four stratigraphic layers, namely; clayey sand, wet sandy clay, laterite and partially weathered basement complex rock as compared with the resistivities of common rocks and borehole lithology of the area. The low SP (< 200 mV)/high resistivity zones in the overburden of profiles P1, P2 and P3 shows the presence of partially weathered basement complex rocks which was probably due to compactness and dryness around the dam. However, the zones of high SP (≥ 200 mV)/low apparent resistivity regions (z1 and z2) of profiles P1 (2 Ωm to 27 Ωm), P2 (3 Ωm to 25 Ωm) and P3 (3 Ωm to 1...

Changing down-hole conditions observed during hydrocarbon exploration can be divers. Some desired ones concern oil/gas shows while others may vary from borehole/drilling fluid association and pressure situations. Managing pressure variations and geopressure zones while drilling has been an issue of concern which has yield generic positive results over the years. However pre-pressure zones (i.e. zones above pressure zones), can display characteristics that are worthy of note in view of the underlying rock potential. Pore pressure and fracture pressure has been evaluated using Eaton’s equations amongst others on data for some reservoir of Agbada formation in the petroliferous Niger Delta. This is in view of knowing the potential of this pre-pressured zone with effective porosity and water saturation necessitated by production operations and well re-entry processes. These computations adopted various pressure models and have yielded good result presented as plots. It was observed that ...

Electrical resistivity method was used to carry out hydrogeophysical study in order to evaluate the groundwater potential of Igarra Comprehensive High School, Akoko Edo Local Government, Nigeria. The vertical electrical sounding technique (VES) was adopted for the resistivity method. A total of eighteen electrical soundings were conducted across the area using the Schlumberger electrode array with AB/2 varying from 1 to 65 m. After the data acquisition, interpretation was carried out qualitatively and quantitatively and the results were presented as sounding curves, tables, charts, maps and geoelectric sections. The generated geoelectric layers from the sounding curves revealed four geologic layers: the topsoil, the weathered layer, the partially weathered/fractured basement and the fresh basement with their resistivity values ranging from 129.1 to 956.4 -m, 6.8 to 1491.1 -m, 261.3 to 776.6 -m and 1515.6 to 2653.5 -m respectively. The overburden thickness in the study area varie...

The study area located in the southern part of Kebbi State, northwestern Nigeria, has witnessed intense mining activities and upscale industrialization in recent years. These events have necessitated deeper and insightful studies into radiological hazard evaluation to mitigate associated adverse consequences and enforce protective measures in the environment. A total of 45 sampled locations each were taken for both industrial and mining sites in northwestern Nigeria to determine the concentration of Potassium-40, Thorium-232 and Uranium-238 radionuclides as applied to radiological hazard analysis. The mean value of the absorbed dose in the industrial site was 90 nGy/h, whereas the mining site recorded a mean value of 210 nGy/h. Other radiological indices such as radium equivalent factor, external risk assessment, internal index and representative gamma index recorded mean values of 187.68, 0.507, 0.547 and 0.768 respectively, whereas the same hazard indices presented higher values o...

Seismic data volume was employed to gain more insights into the complexities of the hydrocarbon hosting units within and outside the vicinity of well control in the OK-field Niger Delta to overcome wrong deductions from complexly faulted subsurface configuration for the oilfield exploration programme. The methodology involved integration of well log with seismic data, seismic structural analysis and seismic attributes analysis. Horizons and fault interpretations were carried out to produce subsurface attribute maps. Lithologic panels derived from well log data showed that the study area is characterized by sand-shale interbedding. Two hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs were delineated within the study interval, namely: R1 and R2. Well to seismic tie revealed that these horizons tied direct hydrocarbon indicators (bright spots) on the vertical sections. Structural interpretation revealed that “OK” field is characterized by a rollover anticline, with a closed trapping mechanism for the D ...

An integrated geophysical and geotechnical investigation was conducted at a proposed dam site located approximately 6km southeast of Rijau in Niger State, Nigeria. The aim of the investigation is to determine the depth of overburden, physical and mechanical properties of soils, bedrock and other subsurface engineering/geological conditions which might affect the safety of the proposed dam. The geophysical investigation involved a resistivity profiling using Werner configuration array. A total of 104 profiling measurements were carried out across the main dam axis. The geotechnical investigation involved surface geological mapping, trial pitting and soil/rock coring at the location mentioned above. This was done to provide controls on the geophysical interpretations. The investigation delineated five subsurface layers which include the topsoil, subsoil, weathered layer, partly weathered/fractured basement and the fresh basement. Depths to the bedrock are generally less than 7.0m. The...

An integrated electromagnetic and geo-electric study was carried out in some parts of Kusa Mountain, Ijero Ekiti, Southwest Nigeria. Very Low Frequency Electromagnetic (VLF-EM) profiling was measured along eight traverses from which conductive (fractured) zones were established. This enabled the location of 10 points at prominent fractured zones where vertical electrical sounding (VES) were conducted to further reveal the geo-electric parameters. The electromagnetic and geo-electric parameters were analysed, processed and modeled with relevant software in order to obtain the spatial distribution of the groundwater. From the groundwater potential map, the study area was rated as low, moderate and high groundwater potential. This study showed that central to eastern region fell within high groundwater zone. The region around VES 8 and 9 (northeastern flank) was rated as moderate while the remaining part is rated as having low groundwater potential. It is recommended that future explor...

A total of twenty-one (21) vertical electrical sounding (VES) data were acquired using Pz-02 resistivity meter within the Precambrian basement area of part of Ilorin Metropolis north central Nigeria to evaluate the hydraulic characteristics of aquifers. The Schlumberger configuration with half-current electrode separation (AB/2) varying from 1 m to 60 m was used. The aquifer hydraulic characteristics such as hydraulic conductivity K and transmissivity T (Ωm2) were calculated from the interpreted VES data using the concept of Dar-Zarrouk parameters. The data, processed with computer software IPI2WIN, indicated three to four geo-electric layers, namely; topsoil, clayey (wet to dry), weathered or fractured basement and fresh basement with resistivity values ranging from 130 to 1469 Ωm, 52.6 to 8552 Ωm, 46.2 to 249 Ωm and 454 to 5022 Ωm, respectively. The depth to aquifer ranges between 6.17 m and 24.9 m and the overburden thickness ranges between 4.1 m and 22.7 m. The assessment of the...
