The March 2011 presentation for STEM in Busan , S Korea was on conversation analysis as founded by Harvey Sachs, and preferences for  movie genres.  Students preferred romantic comedies, horror last, sci fi and adventure in mid ranges.
Ethical considerations are simply to give objective, honest, and humane treatments to all the materials, with no hidden agendas, but embracing the freedom to list personal views as post scripts when appropriate.
Polling movie producers, Europeans and Americans,  students, faculties and using advanced statistics to predict and analyze , like the Gaussian copula regression or Bayesian network, T tests, and other appropriate methods would be explored, with a three year time frame in mind, to complete the Phd on schedule.  One year for European surveys, one for North American , and the last year to integrate , analyze,  discuss, interpret, and draw conclusions for future research and applications.  And I am open to whatever courses are required.
Comparing to other topics, like the impact of disaster movies  on public perception and opinions, research found at google.com,  will give  a  rounded view point,  with more comprehensive directions possible.    What are the associations for the layman and the professional, what specific and practical methods can be attempted  to improve movies  subject matter.  How  can  the film professionals  be approached or persuaded?    The uses of the topic  would be for these purposes,  to promote social  progress , and  awareness,  through  enjoyable, efficient, and  accessible means.  The  strengths of the effort are in the world wide  enamorment with movies, the weakness could be in  reaching the people who can make these changes.  Other kinds of  technology  evolving , like  having a  computer type what you think, which now exist,  could also lead to new kinds of movies  yet foreseen, which however  could succeed in these goals moreso, and beyond
I expect ongoing collaborations ,  seminars, and advisories to round the work out .
My university, the University of California, Santa Cruz was founded like  an alternative to the factory mode of dehumanized education, with narrative evaluations as an option, not grades, round tables  for equal footing with professors, student centered seminars, independent research,  and co ed dorms.  SO I am inspired to continue in that mode..  Combining  the TEFL professor experience, and Public Administration professorship I retired with, plus having started Business English classes at two universities, one in S Korea, and one in Thailand, I expect a focus to emerge , of combining all these things into the cross disciplinary  approach mentioned on the web page. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Background:
In Kyeonju, S Korea, April , 2007 I did a presentation on Body Language in movies, and had shown a movie, “Casablanca “
At the annual international conference for the Society for Teaching English Through the Media ( STEM ),  a power point presentation I still have.
Commonly rated as one of the top movies of all time. It had a timeless message, of conscience reborn, fighting tyranny, and humane values, that resonated with the oft invaded Koreans.
There were questions about the meanings of the body language from one scene,  and those in more academic majors scored higher. The use of subtitles was encouraged by other presenters,  and a test of seeing a scene without sound, guessing the meaning from body language, and then with sound was tried.  Body language was said to be sixty to ninety percent of communication in  one source,  and varied by country, with some similarities.
At Soongsil University in Seoul, S Korea , April 2008 I gave a power point presentation on themes and feelings in movies, at the STEM annual conference.  Showing the classic academy award winning movie “ Beauty and the Beast “, the first animated movie since 1937 to win best movie, in 1937 “Snow White”  won, a survey questionnaire was given to students of different majors.  Then statistically analyzed and discussed.    The themes and related plots in one study were found to be the rags to riches plot, the quest, comedy like “ Tom Jones”,  tragedy like “ Hamlet”,rebirth, beating the monster, and the voyage and return like “ Alice and Wonderland.”  Myths were found to be underlying themes, as researched by Joseph Campbell, who wrote how human consciousness evolved with these.  Hecastotheism, with the divine attributed to animate and inanimate things, zootheism with animals deified,  physitheism with agencies of Nature personified, ( Thor,et al) ,  and psychotheism, which became more abstract with spirituality, and then the forms of monotheism, polytheism. And the common myths related by Campbell, the virgin birth, flood, messiah, and others are common to many cultures, so can be explored to reflect what actually happens to people watching movies, beyond the obvious.
For my Phd work a starting point will be similar  approach, using surveys from the US , Asia, and Europe, and with other questions about how to improve movies, for more social progress.  And more advanced statistics, like the Bayesian network, and Gaussian copula regression,
A  University of Delaware study by  Quarantelli on disaster movies claims  “… the importance of popular culture in affecting the beliefs of people  …”can be found in these kinds of movies.  And  ,  …”
( there is a)  possible  role of movies in shaping the conceptions and ideas held by the public at large..  “
At the 2009 STEM conference,  I gave a presentation on a survey given to students on their opinion about learning English with movies.  On the pre movie quiz sixty-two percent strongly agreed that movies were one of the best, or best way to learn English.  On the post movie quiz, ninety percent strongly agreed on this.  So the recency and immediacy produced a stronger opinion, as a TEFL course in Thailand taught, the recent reinforcement also creates a more lasting knowledge.  Dr.  Colford at that conference advocated helping students find their own Personal Legend,  drawing on movies, myths, and studies.  Kadoyama submitted his study that subtitles were much more efficient for TEFL,  learning slang, and some of the twenty-five thousand idioms in English could become more accessible in movies, with the body language and visuals. Kevin Were used self- made student videos, for evaluating, and learning.
The dominance of US culture and Hollywood is not viewed as a completely good thing in some countries,  one reservation being
…”  Hollywood  glamorizes heroes who ‘ shoot from the hip ‘… ( not) those who think ahead and plan.”  ( A, and H. Toffler, Revolutionary Wealth,  Doubleday  2006 )
Scandanavian countries are reknown for their tolerance, humane and rational social policies, and support of science.  The right in the US increases attacks on science,  in the past even movies would demonize it , so here are  fertile fields for improving and striving to show the positive.  It is unimaginable in the light of reason how science could be attacked even by right wing people, since it made computers, A  bombs and television for starters,  when it has brought us this modern world, which is more good than bad, as Scandanavia demonstrates.  Global warming and nuclear winter are real dangers, well researched with consensus, you might as well deny there are A bombs or computers if you say science is false, an untenable position.  One entertaining  movie with Morgan Freeman and Scarlett Johansson on was a sci fi movie with a positive outcome,  “Lucy”  becomes a liberated consciousness, but the science in it was not real, as all the brain is used, not ten percent.  It is open to question if the consciousness was being described as the ten percent used, not the brain,  studies however were on the brain.  Yoga says you have unlimited untapped power, and yoga is to unlock this.
Until recently, modern science thought  it must avoid the stigma of mysticism, imagination or magic,  the supernatural, or paranormal,  but some New Age physicists are now allowing for spiritual aspects of exploration, like Fritjof Capra, in the Tao of Physics.  Einstein said all along , imagination trumps knowledge
The March 2010 STEM conference had my presentation on teacher’s opinions about using movies for TEFL, and what were the best dialects, accents, or countries for English.  A.J.  Hoge, who does online business with TEFL,  suggested movies were the best way, along with other “ real “ English like newpapers to learn English. That these were better than text books.  Teachers strongly disagreed.  And teachers thought they should choose the movie, with student agreement about this.  But ninety-two percent of students wanted to see the whole movie, while teachers strongly disagreed, that showing scenes was better.  Seventy-five percent of teachers wanted activities with the movie, eighty-one percent of students thought it not necessary.    Seventy-six percent of students strongly agreed that movies were the best for learning English.  Eighty-five percent of teachers strongly agreed movies were not the best for learning English.
The rights attack on science, and the new wave of reactionary nationalism,  ignoring the lessons of history, probably has its roots in the decline of capitalism, and kleptocracy, and the fear of  uncertainty by the uneducated elements of the masses.  So here is significant work to do,  helping allay fears, give acknowledgment, and reassurance to them,  let them find their way, with rewards of physical affection and happiness to come. Carl Sagan  in his book Cosmos, said societies with much physical affection toward the young and all, are only two percent violent.
Other considerations for movie improvement in general, a possible starting point, are ,lower ticket prices,  think outside the box,  no fast food,  no 3D, bring  back projectionists,  do not use regional coding,  contacting producers, actors,  and directors, submitting screen plays,  reviewing moves,  support indies,  get involved in local theater and using the experience to  connect with the public, to survey their preferrences,  and study reviews , comment online to them,...

Ways to Improve Cinema Quality for Improving Social Progress, Cinema Trends, and Perceptions, ( Surveys , Criticism of Current Opinion in Movie Research, Connections to TEFL, Media and Communications, Phenomenology, Post Structuralism, and Reflexivity,.. )

Introduction:

By social progress it will be meant to have the meaning in current common usage, to improve the lot of the overwhelming majority in the world, for example the eighty five percent that share in only ten percent of the world's wealth. Material, spiritual, economic, educationally, with recreation time and health care , all apects of quality of life improved. And with continuing improvement.

In the current internet world, especially among those under twenty five, rottentomatoes.com has a huge influence on movie choices. Their bad review can halve projected sales and revenue. And being owned by Warner Bros, a conflict of interest exists. There are twenty-six million views a month, and it is number four hundred of the most viewed web sites.

It started in 1998, founded by Senh Duong, a University of California , Berkeley student, He was a fan of Jackie Chan, and the movie " Rush Hour" had just came out . It was the first cross over to Hollywood movie for the Chinese star, and Senh created the web site with reviews by many different critics. This led to some criticsm by the chairman of the New York Film Critics Circle , Armand White, about it being " consensus as a substitute for assessment." So here is where the problem exists, if popular tastes are " dumbed down", consensus and sales being the criteria for what is produced, how can improvement be implemented. There are many exceptions to the lack of social interest or social consciousness and awareness in film history, "Grapes of Wrath", "East of Eden" and the many, But the trend has been downwards, and Bob Fraser , a " Friends" producer, and "Love Boat" said a good film comes every two years, IT can be done better. The usual lack of good dialogue, with a car chase , gun fight, or martial arts fight, predictable gratuitous violence, and special effects are no substitute for the kind of intelligence found in films like " My Dinner With Andre", and some action films like " Hero" are well reiewed and give a deep artistic experience, with historical drama. Kurosawa , other non Hollywood prducers, Bergman, Fellini, and others produce true art, without the overriding commercial considerations, so one avenue to explore is how to subsidize more of the same, or create interest and develop tastes for the public, while educating, entertaining , enlightening, , creating shared communal experience as explored in phenomenology, and stimulating social progress.

To shed some further light on this the rottentomatoes.com scores for critics and audiences, of famous films will be listed. An all time classic ", Gone With the WInd", is given a rottentomatoes criics score of ninety-two percent, and audience score of ninety-three ;percent. The "Lion King" gets a critics score of ninety-three percent , and audience score the same. "Casablanca" gets a critics score of ninety-

eight ;percent, and for the audience ninety-five. " The Godfather", sometimes ranked best movie, sometimes " Casablanca" gets ninety-eight percent for audience and critics So where is the mechanism to push for improvement if critics and audiences agree ?, Not clear here. BUt then "Citizen Kane " gets one hundred ;percent from critics, and ninety percent from audiences, So here is a hint about substantiating the White claim that the people are not served by letting consensus be the drving factor for producing movies Armand White was himself removed from the NY Critics Circle for insulting th e director Steve McQueen who did the movie "Fifteen Years a Slave", White claims he did not

The other end of the spectrum on bad reviews has one prime example,' The Quest', the first movie Jean Claude Vandam directed. It got about fourteen percent critics points at rottentomatoes, and twenty three with the audience. It was a martial arts movie, showing many styles, and Jean was slammed for his directing, the first effort. In retrospect, it was watchable, if you liked martial arts, a sketchy story, and brutal violence. so not for all, but that is what the critics of rottentomatoes were saying, too littlen assessment too much consensus. Although exceptions can be found, where accurate reviews could be found , comparing to another site like moviequeryengine would be revealing/ " Romeo Must DIe" got a bad revew at rottentomatoes, about twenty four percent, but " Hero" with Jet Li got over eighty percent, the same actor, and it is not always the best to blindly accept the reviews, what White was suggesting, , assess on your own. Without seeing the review, you might find your mood or interests suited a badly reviewed movie, a B moive or something not highly rated. The horror movies seem to be inferior overall, and students polled in Korea found them to be the worst. Campy or clever ,, rarely, and flat characters with contrived plots seem to be the norm, but a fan might overlook all that.

In the nineteen eighties film " The Night of the Shooting Stars", the Traviani brothers create a scene from Nazi occupation around Tuscany, about the night in August when wishes can be made on the shooting stars, A young girl leaves the church where the Nazis said there was safety, and went into the mine fields to escape with her family. She blocks out some of the worst horror. The mixed reviews came out to be seventy seven percent, one reviewer saying it was the best movie of the eighties others more luke warm with reservations about the length. I saw the movie and it was memorable,, especially the young girls acting and the reality of the war scenes. judgment can be suspended in some cases, and this again is where White would question the whole thing. But you can assess the reviews yourself too not just the movie, so dismissal of them could be over reacting

In view of these things , there is a current need for combating the anti -education reactions in various advanced countries. Films will be shown to among the most effective ,ways to do this. The current US administration is a prime example of the anti-science , anti- immigration , irrational trends in several advanced countries recently getting more egregious.

Jared Diamond wrote a science prize winning book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, and many of the roots of current crises can be found there.

In his work, on how domestication of plants and animals at certain latitudes led to colonization, and the rise of the kleptocracy, or ruling classes.

Addressing the racism and elitism that has blighted history in his work, he has a positive vision in spite of it all, one that can be realized with education.

My six years of presentations for the Society for Teaching English Through the Media ( mainly movies) in South Korea, and one in Japan at the Association for Teaching English Through the Media, showed me movies are among student favorites, beyond escapism, or practicing a foreign language, they have real life experiences, that can be transformative, and enriching their lives greatly.

One example from the USA is the academy award winning

“ Dances with Wolves,” by Kevin Costner, one of the first movies to use the Native American dialect in the script, and humanizing the Native American, reversing the previous savage, trivial, or patronizing films about them. This was thought to have significantly changed public opinion, up the recent news about the Standing Rock protests, that were brutally suppressed, , where US veterans knelt on one knee, surprising the Native Americans s with an apology for the genocides of the past. Dakota Access Pipeline protests ( Standing Rock , , wiki)

Dr. Hamich has done extensive research on film phenomenology, film as an experiential effect, away from the structuralist mechanistic and deterministic view point, aligning with post structuralism. Consciousness is thus explored with the collective experience, a generative historicist phenomenology. The meaning comes from everyday practice, With Christian Ferencz, he does not dismiss the subjective or objective, in exploring consciousness, introspection would be one condition, and its amplification and gestalt with the collective experience could shed light on the paths to improvement, social progress, deeper experience, holistically combining future movies for education, entertainment, enlightenment, social practice, and a host of other elements. The consciousness artifacts, and computer images generated by the mind, add to the infinite possibilities.     Films have been described as the most flexible way to

The general public gains the most of its knowledge about science from the mass media . ( Nelkin, 1987,  Sage Publications,  Public Understanding,  p 155 (2006 )
Globalization, reglobalization, and westernization are affected by the transmitting of culture, the soft power of culture, ideology, institutions,  ( “Bollywood and Globalization “,
D Schaefery, and Kavita Karan, p. 140 ) So for example, a polysemic mode, or many small units in a pastiche of interpretations occur in Hindi film.  Unlike the usual superficiality of First Cinema , or Hollywood film.  Third Cinema did address the neo-colonialsim and exploitation in the world.  Fourth Cinema addressed the indigenous peoples's problems.
In view of these things , there is a current need for combating the anti -education reactions in various advanced countries.  Films can be shown to be among the most effective ways to do this. The late Trump US administration is a prime example of the anti-science , anti- immigration , irrational trends in several advanced countries recently getting more egregious.
Jared Diamond wrote a science prize winning book, Guns, Germs, and Steel,  and many of the roots of current crises can be found  there.
His work was on how domestication of plants and animals at certain latitudes led to colonization, and the rise of the kleptocracy, or ruling classes.  Those  that are over-represented in media and movies.
Addressing the racism and elitism that has blighted history in his work, he has a positive vision in spite of it all, one that can be realized with education.
My six years of presentations for the Society for Teaching English Through the Media  (  mainly movies) in South Korea, as a professor of TEFL, and one in Japan at the Association for Teaching English Through the Media, showed me movies are among student favorites, beyond escapism, or practicing a foreign language, they have real life experiences, that can be transformative,  and enriching their lives greatly. Body language, themes and feelings, student opinions, movie genres,  humor and role play, and conversation analysis were addressed. This is the attempt to integrate and connect these to the social progess theme here, for future STEM or graduate work.
One example of a socially progressive movie  from the USA is the academy award winning
“ Dances with Wolves,”  by Kevin Costner, one of the first movies to use the Native American dialect in the script, and humanizing the Native American,  reversing the previous savage, trivial, or patronizing films about them.  This was  thought to have significantly changed public opinion, like  the recent news about the Standing Rock protests, that were brutally suppressed,  , where US veterans knelt on one knee, surprising the Native Americans with an apology for the genocides of the past.   To get the structure , order and relations into other view points, and the next level, Dr. Hamich has done extensive research on film phenomenology,  film as an experiential  effect,  away from the structuralist mechanistic and deterministic  view point, aligning with post structuralism.  Consciousness is thus explored with the collective experience, a generative historicist phenomenology.  The meaning comes from everyday practice.  With Christian Ferencz,  he does not dismiss the subjective or objective,  in exploring consciousness,  introspection would be one condition,  and its amplification and gestalt with the collective experience could shed light on the paths to improvement,  social progress, deeper experience, holistically combining future movies for education, entertainment, enlightenment,  social practice, and a host of other elements.  The consciousness artifacts,  and computer  images generated by the mind, add to the infinite possibilities. Creating interest, networking with the movie industry, and independent producers, informing public and academic awareness,  creating health  and human self realization,  are among some of the other higher  goals for the development of  the research.
The perception of time, and describing the experience, not explaining and analyzing it are also said to be aspects of phenomenology,  the sensual and senses dominating, This can be viewed as a limiting categorization .  Time can be perceived differently depending on the circumstances from a human perspective.  And something beyond the senses is involved in metaphysics, yoga, and spiritual disciplines.  Something in dreams, something in visions, something in imagination goes beyond the senses.  THe deconstruction,  reductionism, or  a mode of being overly  obsessed with the details of a study , without integrating to bring new territory into the consciousness of all , can also be considered limiting the research unnecessarily.
Reflexivity, prospective and retrospecitve, the extended mind concept, and related areas are other  possible avenues for counterpoints to emerge from.
Modern physics like with quantuum mechanics discovered the interrelationship between the observer and the observed, the experimenter effects the experiment.  Some research has shown that just thinking positive thoughts to a glass of water,  orders its structure.
The structuralists who wanted to mediate between the object realities, the noematic,or objective logic needs  the noetic , the subjective experience of consciousness, with underlying structures, were replaced in the fifties with post structuralism.
There are yoga meditations where the object, the observer, and the observing become one, a samadhi of higher consciousness.  Movies often go for emotions, which are energy blocks, not the vibrating with love and these higher realities , or are just commercial vehicles not even attempting these things. This is what can be addressed, how to improve them.
It could be a natural evolution,  as occasionally a socially interesting timeless kind of film is made.  A producer, Bob Fraser told me a good one every two of three years, Omar Shariff said a masterpiece up to fifty years.  Contacting producers, academic work,  contacting screen writer guilds, writing celebrities or producers, word of mouth, letters to mass media,  writing your own screen scripts,  visiting movie sites and production sites are some initial ideas on implementing these ideals.
Heidegger , a main student or Husserl, was an unapologetic Nazi,  and so his phenonemology is suspect on this basis.
The structuralists wanted to say knowledge is founded by underlying structures, and objective realities, the phenomenologists that it was experiential,  more physical.
The post structuralists were more concerned with writing , history,  saying knowledge is beyond either of these, and Husserl actually was in this camp moreso.  The cultural context and its effects , its history, not just the linguistics,  were needed for a complete knowledge to be produced.  Stephen Pinker, the Noam Chomsky influenced linguist, said the picture of a tree in the mind is the same in any language.  Executing something, not just hearing or seeing, is in pedagogy, the way to understanding, retention, and future imagination , a mentalese.
