In the field of amphora stamp studies much progress has been made, but there is still a need of an overall study of their distribution, so as to give way for economical and historical interpretations. This paper, after setting a necessary methodological frame of limits and handicaps in our research, focuses on an overall assessment of the finding places of amphora stamps, examined from the viewpoint of their production centers. This attempt rests on a thorough study of about fifty stamped amphora production centers (from mainland Greece, the islands, the western coast of Asia Minor and the Propontis). The data derive largely from Virginia Grace’s archives, supplemented by recent research. The objective is to distinguish different patterns of amphora stamp distribution: localized, broader, widespread. At the same time, a more detailed picture of possible export tendencies can emerge, if one takes into account not only the breadth of distribution, but also the volume of the known material from each class.

The first amphora stamps found in Kea have been documented by the Kean antiquarian C.Manthos in the 19th century. He mentions 35 stamped handles found in various parts of the island; 14 of them are depicted in a simple drawing (fig. 2). Among them only three (γ΄, ε΄, ιγ΄) can be identified as Rhodian. Unfortunately these stamps are missing today.
In modern times, three amphora stamps are recorded as isolated finds: a stamped Knidian amphora as an underwater find (no. 3), a part of a Rhodian amphora found in Kalamos cave in Otzias (no. 23), a Rhodian stamp found in Korissia (no. 33). The rest of the stamps have been found during the various research projects that have taken place on the island: six during the survey of the northern part of the island (nos 1, 13, 16, 32, 36, 39), four during the survey of the southeastern part of the island (nos 9, 31, 35, 44), and thirty one during the excavation and restoration work in Karthaia (nos 2, 4-8, 10-12, 14-15, 17-22, 24-30, 34, 37-38, 40-43).
The 44 stamps found in Kea belong to six groups (fig. 6): nineteen Knidian (nos 1-19), fifteen Rhodian (nos 20-34), one Thasian (no. 35), one Dressel 1 (no. 36), three
Lamboglia 2 (nos 37-39), and five of unknown provenance (nos 40-44).
The stamps are dated from the end of the 4th to the 1st century BC. The only exception is a very small stamp with a sole E on the handle of a LRA 1 amphora, dated
in the 5th-6th century AD (no. 43).
The earliest stamps are the Thasian (no. 35, ca 308-298 BC) and the Knidian of the early ΖΗ-group (no. 1, 285-270 BC). Following that and until the mid 2nd century BC, there is a dominance of the Rhodian stamps over the Knidian, which is reversed in the latter half of the century, as is usually observed in Athens and the Aegean (fig. 7). The four Latin stamps of the Lamboglia 2 and Dressel 1 type amphoras can be dated in the late 2nd century BC until the 3rd quarter of the 1st century BC.
The imported amphoras published here argue that Kea took part in the wine trade of the time as an import center. No local amphora type has been identified yet. It is probable that Kea was not self-sufficient in wine at least during the Hellenistic period. However, scattered pieces of evidence prove that viticulture and wine production has been practiced on the island since antiquity.
A major part of the project for the “conservation and presentation of the ancient city of Karthai... more A major part of the project for the “conservation and presentation of the ancient city of Karthaia” on Keos, financed by the European Union, consisted of the thorough excavation and conservation of the ancient theatre. The theater of Karthaia has fifteen rows of seats divided by three stairways into four segments (kerkides); the orchestra forms a complete circle of ca. 11.60 m. diameter, while the scanty remains of a stage-building border the orchestra’s west side. The rows of seats of the koilon rest on a weak understructure of small stones. Wherever excavation was possible beneath this understructure, a stratum of light red earth was revealed, containing numerous sherds dating from Prehistoric to Late Classical times. The distribution of the pottery within this stratum forces us to consider it as debris from some earlier structure in the vicinity of the theater, transported and laid over the slope to level irregularities. The vast majority of this pottery dates to the historical period and was imported from Attica, while Corinthian imports are numerous in the 6th until the early 5th centuries BC. The latest sherds contained in the red stratum provide a terminus ante quem for the construction of the theater, which can now be fixed before the mid-4th century BC.
