    Excess bodyweight is a major public health concern. However, few worldwide comparative analyses of long-term trends of body-mass index (BMI) have been done, and none have used recent national health examination surveys. We estimated worldwide trends in population mean BMI. We estimated trends and their uncertainties of mean BMI for adults 20 years and older in 199 countries and territories. We obtained data from published and unpublished health examination surveys and epidemiological studies (960 country-years and 9·1 million participants). For each sex, we used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate mean BMI by age, country, and year, accounting for whether a study was nationally representative.     Adiponectin and resistin are proteins that affect insulin resistance and atherosclerosis significantly. We investigated adiponectin and resistin concentrations as predictors of cardiovascular events in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes. The study in 2001 comprised 343 unrelated patients with type 2 diabetes (65+/-9.2 years old). They were followed up for 42 months. The baseline duration of diabetes, smoking status and history of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were recorded. BMI, blood pressures, HbA1c, lipid profiles, ECG, creatinine and urine microalbumin were measured. Adiponectin and resistin were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. A 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) performed 1 year postpartum identified 21 GAD(-) women with previous GDM and impaired glucose tolerance (GDM-IGT). Sixty age- and BMI-matched women with normal glucose tolerance (GDM-NGT) were selected by 1:3 matching to the GDM-IGT group. We investigated the effect of retinoic acid on adenovirus-mediated expression of the human NIS gene in the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line.     To compare goserelin and leuprolide given before hysterectomy for symptomatic large fibroid uteri. A randomized study of 66 premenopausal women with fibroid uteri at least 14 weeks of gestation in a gravid uterus. Women were randomized to receive either subcutaneous depot 3.6 mg goserelin or 3.75 mg leuprolide every 4 weeks for a total of 3 doses. Hysterectomy was performed within 1 month of the last dose. A total of 34 women randomized to the goserelin group and 31 women to the leuprolide group were available for analysis. Preoperative hemoglobin level (P=0.89), operative blood loss (P=0.72), and operating time (P=0.39) were not different between the 2 groups. Postoperative hemoglobin was higher in the leuprolide group (P=0.003), but blood transfusion requirement was not different between the groups (P=1.0). Other outcomes and side effects of the drugs were similar. Goserelin and leuprolide administered before hysterectomy for uterine fibroids have similar perioperative outcomes.

We analyzed the incidence and cost of hip fracture from 2001 to 2004 by using data from the Health Insurance Review Agency, Korea. In the over 50 years age group, the number of hip fractures in women increased from 250.9/100,000 persons in 2001 to 262.8/100,000 in 2004, a 4.7% increase. However, that in men decreased from 162.8/100,000 in 2001 to 137.5/100,000 in 2004, a 15.5% decrease. We investigated the levels of glycemic control and the factors associated with glycemic control using data from the KNHANES V (2010 to 2012). Subjects with diabetes diagnosed by a physician or those taking antidiabetic medications were classified as individuals with known diabetes. Of 1,498 subjects aged ≥30 years with diabetes, we excluded 157 individuals who were missing HbA1c data. A total of 1,341 subjects were included in the final analysis. The prevalence of known diabetes was 7.7% (n=1,498, estimated to be 2.32 million people). We compared the incidence of cancer in new users of glargine versus new users of NPH in a longitudinal clinical cohort with diabetes for up to 6 years. From all patients who had been regularly followed at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1/01/2005 to 12/31/2010, 3,680 patients who had a medication record for glargine or NPH usage were obtained from the electronic medical record (EMR). From those we selected 539 new glargine users (age: 60.1±13.6 years, BMI: 32.7±7.5 kg/m2) and 343 new NPH users (61.5±14.1 years, 32.7±8.3 kg/m2) who had no prevalent cancer during 19 months prior to glargine or NPH initiation. We investigated whether the Europe Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) definition of sarcopenia predicts the risk of all-cause mortality in community-dwelling older adults. This study included 284 men and 272 women aged 65 and older. The outcome was all-cause mortality during the 6-year follow-up period. We defined sarcopenia based on the EWGSOP definitions of sarcopenia: height (ht)- or weight (wt)-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM/ht(2) or ASM/wt) assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, leg muscle strength, and short physical performance battery test score. We carried out an observational study in a prospective cohort. The study included a total of 344 SCH and 2624 euthyroid participants aged over 40 years and who were without previously recorded CVDs were included in this study analysis.     Optimal cut points of central obesity identifying subjects at risk for MetS were proposed ethnic-specifically, but have not been established yet. Of particular interest are the values for elderly persons, which have not been identified previously. We investigated the appropriate cut points of WC and VFA for elderly in a community-based cohort in Korea. We recruited 294 men and 313 women aged 65 or over who participated in the KLoSHA. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to estimate the optimal cut points of WC and VFA indicative of MetS. The optimal cut points for predicting MetS were 87 cm for WC, 140 cm(2) for VFA in men, and 85 cm for WC, 100 cm(2) for VFA in women with the Youden index. Similar cut points were obtained with the closest-to-(0, 1) criterion except for VFA in men, which was 122 cm(2).
