Sina Lucia Kottmann
I studied Cultural and Social Anthropology, Comparative Sciences of Religion, and Romanic Languages (Spanish) in Tuebingen and Grenade/Spain. After having been employed as an academic assistant at the department for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tuebingen and at the University of Konstanz, I am currently working on my PhD thesis on an independent basis. Within the frame of my doctorate, I am intensifying my empirical research on discourses and practices regarding the encounter between Christian and Muslim, European and (North) African cultures/life worlds in the border area between Spain and Morocco – may they be located beyond politics or consciously politicised.
My main focus is set on the theme of past and present Moroccan immigration to Spain and on the diverse forms of local folklore and festivals, on cultural memory and symbolical practices of putting on stage the ‘Own’ in confrontation and/or dialogue with the cultural, religious and ethnic ‘Other’.
Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Thomas Hauschild and Prof. Dr. Gunther Dietz

view of the fact of ongoing, public debates on how to bring about a new world order, we trace the notion of a clash of civilizations in intellectual history and depict early attempts to shed light on cultural techniques of exchange and cohabitation.
By examining the material basis of the culture and the body-techniques of visionary experiences, we will argue that
creative human beings are apt to develop social and individual strategies for dealing with one’s own cultural heritage and with Otherness and its various transformations. Following
Foucault and Deleuze we concentrate on different modes of “folding”, i.e. subjectivations, along which outside experience is transformed into inside experience and vice versa in order
to explore the cultural basis on which resistance as well as any commitment to a “clash of civilizations” is negotiated. In the words of Marcel Mauss, “underlying all our mystic states
are corporeal techniques…[and] biological methods of entering into communication with God” (Mauss 1979), and we argue that these have always had and have the potential to challenge dominant cultural politics and ideologies.

The age-old mélange of Muslim and Christian cultures has left manifold visible and invisible traces on the landscapes and in the collective memory of modern-day Spain. Since the 1980s, immigration from the southern shores of the Mediterranean has increased significantly and Spain began to attract attention as an important site for junctions and fractures between Europe and the Maghreb. In the face of current political tensions, debates about the ‘self’ and the cultural, religious and ethnic ‘other’ on Europe’s periphery have become remarkably delicate. Not only do resentments come to the fore, but there is appropriation of the Moorish legacy of Al-Andalus as well. This article presents two popular performances of historic Muslim-Christian ‘clashes’ in the Andalusian province of Granada: the Día de la Toma in the city of Granada and a Festival of Moors and Christians in a small village south of the Sierra Nevada. The selected examples reveal the complexity of identity formation in southern Spain’s multicultural reality, the ambivalence in the encounter with its past and present ‘Moors’ and the politicisation of the public sphere in the course of current regional and global upheavals.
