The morphology of the Lesser yellow underwing, Noctua comes Hubner, [1813], was studied in labora... more The morphology of the Lesser yellow underwing, Noctua comes Hubner, [1813], was studied in laboratory and field. Egg is subspherical, distinctly ribbed by 35-40 vertical ribs and 12-16 finer crossribs. Mature larva greyish-ochreous to greyish-brown. A wide dorsal longitudinal band, slightly darker than ground colour, extends on all segments to abdominal segment 8, becoming much more visible along the lateral margins of abdominal segments 7-8, where couples of typical conspicuous subtriangular black marks stand out. The ones present on segment 11, are usually joined posteriorly by a dark transverse bar, forming a typical horseshoe drawing. Pupa with abdominal segments 4-7 irregularly and deeply punctate along a narrow cephalic ring. Cremaster smooth, non-prominent, bearing two apical stout spines and two pairs of bristles which abundantly exceed in length the base of the main spines.
The efficacy of mating disruption was evaluated against Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) infesti... more The efficacy of mating disruption was evaluated against Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) infesting processing spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) in a two year field study. Two different kinds of pheromone dispenser were utilized during the study, including Ecodian ® pheromone dispenser and a new thread dispenser. Pheromone treatments were effective in controlling S. littoralis populations, with a male capture reduction ranging from 94.6 to 98.9%. The drastically reduced adult male catches resulted in a lowering of larval populations in comparison with untreated plots. Pheromone treatments, in some cases, did not maintain the infestation below the very restrictive economic threshold required by the processing industry. Manual application of Ecodian ® pheromone dispenser was a particularly time-consuming technique and not suitable for field vegetable crops. The thread application resulted in an easier solution, even if a mechanized field installation could further improve the method.

Severino and Scafati, Salerno province), Central (Lanciano, Chieti province) and Northern (Bovolone, Verona province) Italy in the year 2000, with the support of the E.U. Tobacco Research Fund and the Italian Ministry of Agriculture (Tob-Res-Info 96/T/18 project). Flight monitoring was carried out by means of Moericke yellow traps, while aphid infestation was assessed on a 0-5 point scale by observations on untreated tobacco plots. A total of 9,154 alatae were trapped and 66 species determined. At the Scafati station about 40% of the whole captures were collected, followed by Mercato S. Severino (31%), Bovolone (21%) and Lanciano (9%). The identified species were 55 at Scafati, 39 at Mercato S. Severino, 38 at Bovolone and 23 at Lanciano. Seven species (Dahlica triquetrella (Hubner, 1813), Xanthorhoe designata (Hufnagel, 1767), Eupithecia inturbata (Hubner, 1817), Plusia festucae (Linnaeus, 1758), Calamia tridens (Hufnagel, 1766), Polymixis polymita (Linnaeus, 1761), Agrotis syricola Berio, 1936) are new for Southern Italy, 15 taxa were the first time recorded in Puglia, 87 in Campania, 10 in Basilicata and 20 in Calabria. The great amount of faunistic news underlines the high species richness of Southern Italy, a large amount of which is to date unknown. Key Words: Macrolepidoptera, faunistic reports, Southern Italy. A comparison of sprays for control of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Myzus nicotianae Blackman on to... more A comparison of sprays for control of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Myzus nicotianae Blackman on tobacco were conducted in two field experiments at Scafati (province of Salerno) and Bovolone (province of Verona), in Italy. Seven insecticides (imidacloprid, pymetrozine, acetameprid, pirimicarb, deltamethrin+pirimicarb, bifenthrin+oil, pymetrozine+tega bion) were tested. Treatments were applied on the transplanting date and repeated three times (at twenty-day intervals) except for the bifenthrin+oil treatment where oil was repeated every 4 days for 40 days after transplant. Observations on the aphids number or the aphid infestation remarks were recorded at different dates after transplant. At Scafati, the overall effect test for treatments was significant for average infestation score, its monthly increment and average percentage of control achieved. Typical is the big black slightly curved and pointed spine present on the foretibiae. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae- Catocalinae) occurring for the past few years on pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) in the countryside at Scafati and Nocera (Salerno, Southern Italy). The main aspects of the bio- ethology of this phytophagous are emphasized . The adults fly from May to September, with two freguency peaks in the end of June and in the second decade of August. The eggs are laid either separately or in groups of 2-4 on the underside of pomegranate leaves. The larvae which feed at night produce characteristic erosions on the leaves and sometimes skeletonize the twigs. In sumrner they pupate in silky white cocoons on the plant while in autumn in a cocoon at the crown of the host plant.
