In this paper, the optimization of response parameter of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) wi... more In this paper, the optimization of response parameter of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) with multiple quality characteristics has been attempted based on Orthogonal Array (OA) with Taguchi methodology. The optimum level of process parameters were determined by considering Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and performing the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). In this experimental work, the control parameters namely pulse current, gap voltage, pulse duration, pulse off time and dielectric pressure were optimized by considering the multiple performance characteristics including Material Removal Rate (MRR), Electrode Wear Rate (EWR), Over Cut (OC) and Taper Angle (TA) for Inconel 600 using rotary brass hollow tubular electrode of 1 mm diameter with through hole centre flushing technique. The experimental results show that the machining characteristics of EDM process can be improve effectively through this approach and has been validated by confirmation experiment.

Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) has established itself in the field of precision manuf... more Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) has established itself in the field of precision manufacturing because it can be fully automated and flexible in cutting the complex and intricate shapes in one setup through difficult to machine electrically conductive components. To improve the optimum capabilities of WEDM process, it's often required to determine the best possible combination of control parameters. But, this optimum setting of control parameters is differing from material to material. In this research work, an effort has been made to determine the optimum setting of pulse on time, pulse off time, wire feed and servo voltage while WEDM process of Inconel 625. The experimental design is based on the L9 Taguchi orthogonal array. Further, the standard deviation method has been combined with grey relational analysis (GRA) to optimize the material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR) simultaneously.

In the present study, the performance parameters of EDM process has been evaluated to achieve the... more In the present study, the performance parameters of EDM process has been evaluated to achieve the feasibility in drilling of AISI 329 stainless steel which is extensively used in several industrial applications, e.g., heat exchangers, chemical tanks, pressure vessel parts, compressor parts, and seawater desalination plants. The selection of EDM control parameters largely depends on the material combination of electrode and work-piece. EDM manufactures only supply these control parameters for a limited number of material combinations. The present experimental work exhibits the optimum selection of control parameters (i.e., pulse current, pulse duration, pulse off time, and dielectric pressure) to maximize the material removal rate and minimize the electrode wear rate and taper angle of the hole simultaneously using hybrid optimization technique. The comparative investigation of copper and brass electrode revealed that copper electrode improves the hole quality and exhibits good machinability compare to brass electrode. It was observed that brass electrode wears rapidly because its high electrical resistivity, low melting point and low thermal conductivity compare to copper electrode. The most dominant parameters affecting the performance of EDM process has been evaluated using ANOVA. Further, the confirmation experiment shows a good agreement with the predicted value.
