Purpose – This paper seeks to investigate Bhutanese perspectives on women leaders and the barriers faced by women in acquiring leadership positions
Design/methodology/approach –The method used to carry out this study on barriers to women's leadership: Perception of Bhutanese women leaders, men leaders, lady teachers and Class X and XII girls, are qualitative and the design employed is phenomenology. Data were obtained through a face to face interview involving women leaders, men leaders, teachers and girls of high schools. This study examined root cause and revealed the barriers that had led to the spiral negative effect to the life of women. The themes derived from the study are: Poor self image forbids women's leadership, discrimination of women in the Bhutanese society deprives women in leadership, domestication of the women to household chores prevents women to take up the leadership role, low qualification of women results in fewer women's leadership, and fear of the challenging dual role suppresses women in leadership.
The culture of harassment of the women from home environment to work sphere had ingrained the negative traits in women, thereby women themselves had been posed as the barrier to the leadership. The literature from both the international and local sources pertaining to the women study were critically reviewed.
Findings – The findings shows family structure and women's commitment to the family as the most significant barriers perceived by the Bhutanese women. The following are the findings: Bhutanese society is by and large is found out to be male dominated; and women are deprived of opportunities in reality, and women are more family-oriented which inhibits them from taking up leadership roles. The study also shows that Bhutanese culture has deeply embedded gender bias norms. This study further revealed that women and men in various job positions do not differ in their perceptions with regard to the barriers they face for career progression.
