This chapter explores the dynamic definition of community art therapy and provides a collection of first-hand experiences from art therapists practicing community art therapy in various settings. The reflections from art therapists offer the reader insight into the complex and fluid nature of practicing clinically within the community setting and creating spaces for artmaking as a form of collective healing. This chapter illustrates themes of community artmaking as a means of cultivating belonging and connection; dealing with trauma; strengthening support systems; creating opportunities for social justice; and opening the conversation about sustainable practices that support the community beyond the space and beyond the life of the program or the organization.

Chapter: What Else Can This Be?: Creativity as an Iterative Practice
Rabbi Adina Allen & Pat B. Allen, Ph.D.

    Abstract
Imagine an ideal teaching studio, light flooding in through a wall of windows, high ceilings, colorful signs of welcome and inspiration, walls with paint marked echoes of past creative endeavors ready to welcome the next person, tables with paints and brushes laid out within easy reach, table and chairs ready to host the next encounter with collage or writing. Across the room, a comfy couch and chairs for when reverie calls, bookshelves with inspiring materials and boxes of all sorts of found objects and art supplies, a small kitchen with tea and snacks. Jewish Studio Project, a combination of  art studio and Beit Midrash (house of study), had been carefully crafted by Rabbi Adina Allen and art therapist, Pat B. Allen to be the perfect home for workshops combining traditional Jewish text study (hevruta) and art making to generate new ideas for Judaism and opportunities for renewal and self-exploration for Jews and all who are called to join in.
This chapter will explore how the foundational technologies of Jewish Studio Project adapted to the shutdown of physical operations due to the COVID 19 pandemic and the unexpected gifts and deep learning that emerged while transforming a vibrant in-person experience into a successful online phenomenon. The JSP methodology and philosophy is grounded in a belief in the Creative Source as universal and available to everyone. Reliance on this belief guided the mindset of opportunity that led to an expansion of services, a deepening of the methods used, and new insights into such topics as accessibility and community building that can be translated into other settings, both online and  in-person.
Finally, we discovered the inequity that is foregrounded by the innovations presented in this chapter. All these wonderful things only can accrue when your home is safe and secure, your basic needs met. Using this learning as a springboard to address inequity is one area for future deep thought and right action and continued translation of our work. May the next iterations come ever closer to creating the just and joyous world we envision.

The specters of whiteness in art therapy have continued to haunt the field since its formal foundation in the early 1970 s. The authors propose a radical care ethic for these ghostly matters in art therapy that centers the creative process as a critical method for white art therapists to develop the capacity for sincere antiracist work. The social and material conditions of neoliberalism are haunted by the specters of whiteness and colonialism, which, until recently, have been deliberately veiled within art therapy. The authors re-envision the studio as a critical site for intra-community antiracist practice and reclaiming of histories for a justice-to-come.

AbstractThe Open Studio as a way of working evolved in an effort to maximize the effectiveness of the artmaking process as a means to increase and deepen consciousness. This method differentiates art from psychotherapy and calls into question the validity of marrying these two experiences. Is the open studio within the purview of art therapy? This remains an open question subject to the experimentation of art therapists who apply the method in work situations.
