Bacteria regulate global biogeochemical cycles and much of this activity occurs in shallow coasta... more Bacteria regulate global biogeochemical cycles and much of this activity occurs in shallow coastal sediments, however little is known of the seasonality or how changes in environmental conditions influence the active sediment bacterial communities. Havre-aux-Maisons (Magdalen Islands, Canada), a relatively pristine enclosed shallow coastal lagoon, is of particular biological interest since it has no inflowing rivers and provides an opportunity to investigate non-estuarine shallow marine sediments. Potentially active taxa in surface sediments were identified over a 15 month period using high throughput rRNA amplicon sequencing. Sediment bacterial communities were diverse at the species level, with high Beta diversity. Throughout most of the sampling period, communities consisted of taxa that were closely related to each other, suggesting that specific environmental conditions at a given time point favored taxa with similar ecological traits. Many activities of daily living, such as picking up glasses, holding a fork or opening a door, wh... more Many activities of daily living, such as picking up glasses, holding a fork or opening a door, which most people do without thinking, can become insurmountable for people who have upper extremity disabilities. The alternative to asking for human help is to use some assistive devices to compensate their loss of mobility; however, many of those devices are limited in terms of functionality. Robotics may provide a better approach for the development of assistive devices, by allowing greater functionality. In this paper, we present results of a study (n=31) which objectives were to evaluate the efficacy of a new joystick-controlled seven-degree of freedom robotic manipulator and assess its potential economic benefits. Results show that JACO is easy to use as the majority of the participants were able to accomplish the testing tasks on their first attempt. This paper presents a method to automatically recognize events and driving activities during the ... more This paper presents a method to automatically recognize events and driving activities during the use of a powered wheelchair (PW). The method uses a support vector machine classifier, trained from sensor-based data from a datalogging platform installed on the PW. Data from a 3D accelerometer positioned on the back of the PW were collected in a laboratory space during PW driving tasks. 16-segmented events and driving activities (i.e. impacts from different side on different objects, rolling down or up on incline surface, going across threshold of different height) were performed repeatedly (n=25 trials) by one operator at three different speeds (slow, normal, high). We present results from an experiment aiming to classify five different events and driving activities from the sensor data acquired using the datalogging platform. Classification results show the ability of the proposed method to reliably segment 100% of events, and to identify the correct event type in 80% of events.

This suggests the presence of compensatory arm-trunk coordination minimizing the deflections of the hand from the intended trajectory. It has been postulated that vestibular signals elicited by the trunk motion and transmitted to the arm motor system play a major role in the compensation. One prediction of this hypothesis is that vestibular stimulation should influence arm posture and movement during reaching. In a previous study, such temporal co-ordination was not found in patients with left-hemispheric brain lesions reaching with either their dominant paretic or with their non-dominant non-paretic arm. This co-ordination deficit may be associated in part with the presence of a lesion in the dominant left hemisphere. If so, then no deficit should be observed in patients with stroke-related damage in their non-dominant right hemisphere moving with their ipsilesional arm. ABSTRACT Ecological services provided by coral reefs are threatened by complex dynamics of global... more ABSTRACT Ecological services provided by coral reefs are threatened by complex dynamics of global and local drivers. Fostering an appropriate management at local scale may enhance the resilience of the coral reefs facing large-scale issues, more laboriously manageable. We propose to model a bespoke reef health index (RHI) using a comprehensive dataset of socio-ecological variables and the Boosted Regression Trees (BRT). The variation of the RHI was primarily explained by the cluster of physiographic variables (55.45%), to a lesser extent, by land cover (36.42%), and finally by sociological variables (8.12%). The dispersion and the mean of the slope, as well as the built-up area increasingly contributed to the satisfactory modeling of the RHI (14.07, 14.12, 15.37%, respectively). These results will hopefully be useful for the stakeholders tasking with integrated coastal sustainability.

Natural benthic communities were exposed to 7 different levels of mussel biodeposition (equivalent to that produced by 0-764 mussels m(-2)) over 50 days. Benthic communities responded as predicted from the Pearson, T.H., Rosenberg, R., 1978. Macrobenthic succession in relation to organic enrichment and pollution of the marine environment. Oceanogr. Mar. Biol. Annu. Rev. 16, 229-311 model of organic enrichment. Total abundance and species richness decreased with increasing biodeposition. The abundance and biomass of opportunistic species (Capitella spp.) increased in the mesocosms subject to the greatest biodeposition.
