In recent years societies across the world have experienced an increase in student demonstrations.  This paper examines what may be the cause of these demonstrations, and the two countries that are examined are Chile and South Africa. The question that is considered: How has democratization and economic liberalization contributed to the rise of student demonstrations? The paper examines various aspects of each society, by first contextualizing their history, and then looking at modern day. What was observed are the actions taken in the past have come to define these societies in the present. The youth have this desire to build a prosperous future, and want to break free from their countries past because it is their future. At the end of the day, the common sentiments of free and equitable education come to define these demonstrations.
