Spandex, a synthetic
stretch fiber, is found
in activewear, tailored
clothing, and swimwear. It may be identified on the label
as spandex, the generic term, or with a trade name such
as Lycra, Cleerspan, and Numa. Elastane is a modification
of spandex.
The elastic fiber may be used as a single yarn or as the
inner core of a yarn. The stretch yarn may be blended
with polyester, wool, cotton, rayon or acetate, as well as
other fibers in a knit or woven fabric construction.
Garments usually have less than 5% spandex blended
with other synthetic or natural fibers.
Spandex is resistant to damage from sunlight, heat,
aging, and seawater. A special type of spandex is offered
by DuPont for swimwear that is chlorine resistant.
Perspiration and body oils do not easily damage spandex.
