As the aftershocks of the latest economic meltdown reverberate throughout the world, and people organize to physically occupy the major financial centers of the West, few experts and even fewer governments have dared to consider a world without the powerful markets that brought on the crash. Yet, as Francois Morin explains in A World Without Wall Street? , this is the very step that needs to be taken as quickly as possible to avoid a perpetual future of dehumanizing working conditions, devastated ecosystems, and the submission of public policies to private interests. In this insightful and radical take on global finance, Morin recommends nothing less than a revolutionary reconstruction of the international monetary system. More, he recommends that the laws of societies be reformed so that the power of management may be shared among all of the actors involved in production, not concentrated in the hands of the few. This shift, argues Morin, will transform the monetary system into a common good for all of humanity, rich or poor. With Wall Street at the center of the very power structure that needs to be dismantled, Morin takes broad aim at the purely speculative financial games and arcane instruments by which the global economy and its citizens are held captive. In this very timely and provocative book, Morin bravely offers a way forward—instead of simply triaging a hemorrhaging system, he persuasively asks us to consider a subversive reinvention.

In "This Strange Idea of the Beautiful", Francois Jullien brings together ideas of beauty from both Eastern and Western philosophy in order to challenge the assumptions underlying our commonly agreed upon definition of what is beautiful and offer a new way of beholding art. Jullien argues that the Western concept of beauty was established by Greek philosophy and consequently became embedded within the very structure of European languages. And due to its relationship to language, this concept has determined ways of thinking about beauty that often go unnoticed or unchecked in discussions of Western aesthetics. Moreover, through globalization, Western ideals of beauty have even spread to cultures whose ancient traditions are based upon radically different aesthetic foundations, yet these cultures have adopted such views without question and without recognizing the cultural assumptions they contain. Looking specifically at how Chinese texts have been translated into Western languages, Jullien reveals how the traditional Chinese refusal to isolate or abstract beauty is obscured in translation in order to make the works more understandable to Western readers. Creating an engaging dialogue between Chinese and Western ideas, Jullien reassesses the essence of beauty.

: The art and writings of Eva Švankmajerová are not widely known outside of her native Czechia, despite being exhibited and published internationally. Having joined the Group of Czech and Slovak Surrealists in 1970 along with her husband and collaborator Jan Švankmajer, she would become one of its leading members until her death in 2005. This essay, approached partly through a dialogue that includes an expressive, imaginative voice in acknowledgement of the Švankmajers’ working relationship, focuses on two interlinked themes relating to aspects of her paintings of the 1970s: the location of the female body among domestic environments or objects; and the exploration of gender roles and corporeal identities. These are articulated against contexts within Czechoslovak surrealism, as well as to those relating to domesticity, gender, and feminism in socialist Czechoslovakia during the postwar era.

Abstract Despite continuing interest among writers and curators in Surrealism's use of photography, the impressive quantity and scope of work by Surrealist photographers in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic has remained largely unacknowledged in English language scholarship. This article focuses on a range of photographers from the 1940s to the present, all with an explicit relationship with Cezech Surrealist groups, whose work privileges the everyday environment as seen through a Surrealist lens. Images by Emila Medková, Miroslav Hák, Vilém Reichmann and Alois Nožička are discussed as examples of Czech Surrealism's distinctive interrogation of the ‘objective poetry’ of its surroundings.
