The current study investigates the relationships between the perceived stress and coping strategies in order to shed further light on the meaning of the proactive coping. Coping with a stress situation in a proactive way means activities that the persons can execute before the stressor occurs, as a means of developing and using their personal and social resources to turn the everyday stress into a positive experience. Results show that people who more often use specific proactive coping strategies (such as proactive coping, reflective coping, strategic planning), specific reactive problem-focused coping strategies (such as active coping, planning, suppression of competing activities), and reactive emotion-focused specific coping strategy, positive reinterpretation and growth, experience less stress. People who more often use reactive emotion-focused specific coping strategies such as focusing on and venting of emotions, denial, behavioral and mental disengagement, seeking emotional social support, experience more stress.
