At peak times, two-thirds of the players were foreign citizens. This was a completely new dimension, as football in Colombia was in its very beginnings and the players were often still in their heyday. However, almost all the players left their clubs for Colombia without the necessary transfer permits, which brought the Dimayor into conflict with the Colombian and other South American football associations, as well as the CONMEBOL and FIFA. Therefore, the Dimayor is either an early El Dorado or the "first real pirate league" of football, depending on your point of view. The question is how the Dimayor was able to employ players over a period of six years from summer 1948 to autumn 1954 who, according to the international statutes, were not eligible to play for the clubs. To answer this question, documents from FIFA's archive were analysed. At the same time, a brutal civil war known as “La Violencia” has been raging in Colombia for some time already, causing tens of thousands of deaths. How can the coexistence of rapid (football) development with major sporting events and the raging violence be explained? Even if “Violencia” is now considered to have been researched, this question has not yet been examined from a socio-historical perspective for football. Based on the FIFA sources, the present article contributes to more clarity that the Colombian football association was not excluded from FIFA as is often assumed. The socio-historical events in Colombia will be put into context with the early football mecca. The classification of football in the historical context of Colombia's civil war-stricken history will be made before the disputes between Dimayor, Adefútbol, CONMEBOL and FIFA are traced. A look at the correspondence between the parties - and thus quasi behind the scenes - provides a complementary picture.
