The aim of the present interdisciplinary study is to explore our understanding of the unreplaceable character of the person among adults. We interviewed 10 adults between 25 and 46 years of age, of both sexes, who had been living together with a partner for a minimum of 1 year, since that kind of relationship is expected to be a significant link. We carried forward a series of interviews to collect their reactions and commentaries on a fictional episode whose plot addresses the possibility of replacing a person with a software or a robot (“Be Right Back”, Black Mirror). The categories that emerged in the qualitative analysis were: shock, reality-unreality, irreplaceability, intuition. The article discusses these findings under the light of one aspect of the philosophical problem of personal identity. Even though it certainly does not solve the debate, the analysis of the interviews suggests that there is a strong intuitive perception of the specifically individual and therefore unreplaceable character of each person. This robust perception, however, was not accompanied by an equally clear justification of the source of such identity. In our interpretation this conveys plausibility to the simple view, the philosophical stance that maintains that personal identity is a primitive fact, non-reducible either to physical or to mental qualities. We also point at a possible continuation of this study.
The goal of this paper is to find out whether for Thomas Aquinas the peccatum naturae consists only in the privation of supernatural grace, i.e. that human nature would be bereft of divine grace but would not present an additional weakness relative to its own moral strength, which consists in the capacity to act according to reason. The issue is at the intersection between theology and philosophy but how it is resolved has a direct impact on our philosophical understanding of man and of his moral condition. Neither a naïvely optimistic nor a hopelessly pessimistic reading of man’s situation follow from the Christian revelation about the origins of human history.
