It was prompted by European policies that affirmed common principles across the education systems of European member states but the meaning of affinity was deeply ambiguous. Researchers traced europeanisation through critical and comparative policy studies but, anchored epistemologically through narratives about the space of governing, this research did not grasp europeanisation in ways that addressed the space of experience. In this paper, we examine the concept of 'space' to identify limits within research on europeanisation and how geosocial frameworks reveal the europeanisation of education by referencing transnational topologies and geostrategic choices. Using the remaking of visual education in the 1920s as a case study of europeanisation, we suggest that the space of education becomes visible as selective tradition is made in-between period and lived cultures and as strategic choices congeal particular 'spaces of orientation', which spatialize learning and orient knowledge building towards preferred rather than probable futures. Grasping space in ways that reference geosocial worlds shows how geostrategic positioning affects the space of education by institutionalising a right to learn, which also authorises a certain right to look.
