A draconematid nematode Prochaetosoma dokdoense sp. nov., first discovered in December 2006 at a ... more A draconematid nematode Prochaetosoma dokdoense sp. nov., first discovered in December 2006 at a subtidal zone of Dokdo, Korea, the northwest Pacific Ocean, is described. This new species was obtained from coarse detritus and shell gravels. Prochaetosoma dokdoense sp. nov. differs from all the species hitherto described by the following combination of characteristics: longer slender body (910–1175 μm), elongate loop-shaped amphidial fovea in male (distal end of ventral arm slightly curved anteriorly), eight cephalic adhesion tubes in both sexes positioned just anterior to swollen pharyngeal region, number of posterior sublateral adhesion tubes (6 in male and 6–10 in female) and posterior subventral adhesion tubes (7–8 in male and 8–9 in female), longer spicule length (78–86 μm), long cylindro-conoid tail (114–131 μm in male and 116–131 μm in female) and higher ratio c′ (6.5–7.5 in male and 7.4–9 in female). A table comparing the major differential diagnostic characteristics of the species of the genus Prochaetosoma Micoletzky, 1922 is presented. For a reliable understanding of the geographic distribution and species identification of the genus Prochaetosoma, a pictorial key showing the relative length of non-annulated tail terminus to total tail length in both sexes is included, together with a dichotomous species identification key based on adults and fourth-stage juvenile as far as known. This is the first record of the genus Prochaetosoma in the northwest Pacific Ocean.

Two xanthids, Etisus laevimanus Randall, 1840 and Paraxanthias elegans (Stimpson, 1858), were newly reported in Korean waters as part of continuous taxonomic studies on crabs. The genus Paraxanthias Odhner, 1925 was also reported for the first time in Korea. Of these, the examined specimen of P. elegans showed eight feathery hairs on the subdistal tip of the first gonopod, which differs from the description of Dai and Yang at 1991. Here, the descriptions and illustrations of these species are provided. Korean Xanthoidea currently consists of 30 species belonging to 25 genera.
As a result of continuous taxonomic studies on the Korean crabs, two varunid crabs, Hemigrapsus t... more As a result of continuous taxonomic studies on the Korean crabs, two varunid crabs, Hemigrapsus takanoi Asakura and Watanabe, 2005 and Sestrostoma toriumii (Takeda, 1974), are newly reported from Korean waters. Hemigrapsus takanoi, as a sibling species of H. penicillatus, has not been recognized in Korean waters, and this species occurs in the sympatric habitat with H. penicillatus in the Korean peninsula. Sestrostoma toriumii (Takeda, 1974) is associated with thallassinid Upogebia major (De Haan, 1841) and echiuran Urechis unicintus (Von Drache, 1881) as the case of S. balssi (Shen, 1932). The Korean S. toriumii showed smaller size than those mentioned in the original description. Their illustrations and pictures are provided with descriptions, and the distributions of these species in the Korean peninsula are also provided.

In this study, the species composition and population genetic properties of the sea slater, Ligia... more In this study, the species composition and population genetic properties of the sea slater, Ligia, in South Korea were investigated using mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences. Two groups of sea slaters, genetically isolated from each other, a Western Group (WG) and an Eastern Group (EG) were identified. These groups exhibited considerable genetic divergence from Ligia exotica, previously recorded as a species inhabiting this country. These results indicate that there may be two species of Ligia in South Korea, but there is a small probability that both groups are L. exotica. A comparison of their genetic properties indicates that WG has a higher effective population size than EG, and that EG may have experienced a recent expansion, implying that it has a shorter history in South Korea than WG. These findings suggest that the South Korean sea slater populations may have been established as a result of several colonization events that can be traced on a continental scale by phylog...

Dinetia orientalis n. sp. mainly differs from D. nycterobia Decraemer and Gourbault, 1997 by the following characters: large number of cephalic adhesion tubes (38-42 in male and 37-40 in female), number of posterior sublateral adhesion tubes (9-11 in male and 13-14 in female) and posterior subventral adhesion tubes (17-22 in male and 19-24 in female), the buccal cavity (narrow and armed with a dorsal and two weak ventrosublateral teeth), spicules (strongly arcuated and with a pair of strongly dilated gubernaculums around distal part of spicules), and higher "c" value (8.3-10.4 in male and 8.5-10.7 in female). This is the first report on free-living marine nematodes from South Korea, and the first record of the genus Dinetia in the Northwest Pacific.

An explo-laparotomy was performed for the purpose of palliative resection of the stomach and to evaluate the nature of splenic and peri-pancreatic mass lesions. The pathologic stage of the gastric carcinoma was stage IB (T2N0M0) and the clinical stage of the diffuse large cell type lymphoma was IIA2S. Following surgery and chemotherapy, the patient is now in a disease-free state.
Agrocybe cylindracea, an edible mushroom belonging to Bolbitiaceae, Agaricales, is widely used as... more Agrocybe cylindracea, an edible mushroom belonging to Bolbitiaceae, Agaricales, is widely used as invaluable medicinal material in the oriental countries. This study was initiated to find the genes expressed during the fruiting body formation of A. cylindracea. The cDNAs expressed differentially during fruiting body morphogenesis of A. cylindracea were isolated through subtractive hybridization between vegetative mycelia and fruiting bodies. The cDNAs expressed in the fruiting body morphogenesis of A. cylindracea were cloned and twenty genes were identified. Eleven were homologous to genes of known functions, three were homologous to genes in other organism without any function known. Six were completely novel genes specific to A. cylindracea so far examined. Some genes with known functions were a pleurotolysin, a self-assembling poreforming cytolysins; Aa-Pri1 and Pir2p, specifically induced genes during fruiting initiation of other mushroom, Agrocybe aegerita; an amino acid permease; a cytochrome P450; a MADS-box gene; a peptidylprolyl isomerase; and a serine proteinase. For other clones, no clear function was annotated so far. We believe the first report of the differentially expressed genes in fruiting process of A. cylindracea will be great helps for further research.
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of refractory anemias resulting from a clonal stem ce... more Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of refractory anemias resulting from a clonal stem cell disorder often associated with cytogenetic abnormalities. There is increasing recognition of immunological abnormalities in patients with MDS, including defective B- and T-cell function, hyper- or hypogammaglobulinemia and monoclonal gammopathy. MDS have been associated with Sjögren's syndrome, polymyalgia rheumatica, relapsing polychondritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Although there may be various rheumatologic features, including acute arthritis in MDS, chronic inflammatory arthritis is uncommonly combined. There have been a few reports that described cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) concurrent with MDS, but advanced rheumatoid arthritis with typical joint deformities has rarely been reported. We report a case of rheumatoid arthritis with atlantoaxial subluxation combined with refractory anemia in a 31-year-old woman.

Sexual development progresses only when the A and B mating types are compatible. Such mating incompatibility occasionally limits the efficiency of breeding programs in which crossing within loci-shared strains or backcrossing strategies are employed. Therefore, understanding the mating system in edible mushroom fungi will help provide a short cut in the development of new strains. We isolated and identified pheromone and receptor genes in the B3 locus of P. eryngii and performed a functional analysis of the genes in the mating process by transformation. A genomic DNA library was constructed to map the entire mating-type locus. The B3 locus was found to contain four pheromone precursor genes and four receptor genes. Vegetative growth of four different strains of Hericium erinaceus was observed. The temperature s... more Vegetative growth of four different strains of Hericium erinaceus was observed. The temperature suitable for optimal mycelial growth was determined to be 25℃, with growth observed in the extend temperature range of 20~30℃. The different strains of this mushroom showed distinct pH requirements for their optimum vegetative growth, with the most favorable growth observed at pH 6. Considering vegetative mycelial growth, PDA, YM, Hennerberg, Hamada, and Glucose peptone were the most favorable media, and Czapek Dox, Hoppkins, Glucose tryptone, and Lilly were the most unfavorable media for these mushroom strains. With the exception of lactose, most of the carbon sources assayed demonstrated favorable vegetative growth of H. erinaceus. For mycelial growth, the most suitable nitrogen source was alanine and the most unsuitable was histidine. Oak sawdust medium supplemented with 10~20% rice bran was the best for mycelial growth of the mushroom.
