Homayra Ziad
Homayra is a scholar-activist, educator and writer with over fifteen years’ experience in religious and interreligious education and programming. After receiving a doctorate in Islamic Studies from Yale, she was Assistant Professor of Islam at Trinity College and currently leads the integration of Islam and Muslim communities at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies (ICJS) in Baltimore. At ICJS, she create programs for activists and emerging religious leaders to explore the intersection of religion and social justice. She speaks regularly to raise public awareness of Islam and Islamophobia and serves on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Maryland. She is also co-chair of the American Academy of Religion’s Interreligious and Interfaith Studies Group. Homayra has written for many academic and popular venues and consults for the media. She is co-editor of the forthcoming book, Words to Live By: Sacred Sources for Interreligious Engagement (Orbis Press). Her ongoing creative writing project, Restorying Islam, weaves personal reflections with spiritual narratives of hope, beauty, grace, and grit. Homayra is committed to introducing Islamic traditions of beauty, mercy, and self-inquiry into the public square. She is always looking for collaborative projects at the intersection of religion and social justice, and religion and the creative arts, especially projects of narrative change and recovery.
