This seems to be problematic. Authority is being challenged on a daily basis and it seems that authority figures regularly give in to the demands made by strikers and demonstrators. This study tries to determine why authority is constantly being challenged in South Africa and whether culture and politics could play a role. There seems to be cultural differences regarding authority and authority figures in South Africa.

Debating the problems will not solve the problems. Constructive initiatives need to be put into place to combat this ongoing and worsening problem. South Africa is experiencing a wide range of skills shortages, but it is the lack of technical skills that is of a concern. In light of all the problems being experienced in South Africa due to the lack of maintenance to infrastructure as well as repeated accidents this article examines the role that technical schools could play in solving these issues. South Africa does not produce enough engineers to meet the manufacturing needs of the country. South Africa is bedevilled by a low growth rate that leads to unemployment and poverty. This could be solved by improving the technical skills of the population and in order to do so we need well-functioning technical schools.

The struggle was for political freedom, democracy, a free South Africa. The turning point in the struggle history is by no doubt the 1976 riots in Soweto. This was a black struggle, rightly so because black people were on the receiving end of apartheid. The black youth played an enormous role in the liberation of South Africa. The question is what role did the white youth, the Afrikaner youth play during this time. The answer is nothing. The next question is what are the consequences of this apathy?

In alliance with the small Afrikaner Party, the National Party won the 1948 election with the narrowest of majorities, five seats, from the United Party and for the next forty years ruled with an iron fist. It kept the blacks in check, side lined the English population and promoted Afrikaans and the Afrikaner at all cost. The question is: How did they do it? And why did they do it?

A significant amount of learners dropout of technical high schools, even before they reach grade 12. Technical schools has the same constrains as other high schools, but over and above these technical schools face other challenges. They are more expensive to run and have a unique curriculum; they also play an important role in skills development, manufacturing and the training of scarce manpower needs. It is therefore essential that these schools operate at peak performance and that everything possible is done to maintain these schools.
