Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses of the A/Goose/Guangdong/1/1996 lineage (GsGd), ... more Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses of the A/Goose/Guangdong/1/1996 lineage (GsGd), which threaten the health of poultry, wildlife and humans, are spreading across Asia, Europe and Africa, but are currently absent from Oceania and the Americas. In December 2021, H5N1 HPAI viruses were detected in poultry and a free-living gull in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these viruses were most closely related to HPAI GsGd viruses circulating in northwestern Europe in spring 2021. Analysis of wild bird migration suggested that these viruses may have been carried across the Atlantic via Iceland, Greenland/Arctic or pelagic routes. The here documented incursion of HPAI GsGd viruses into North America raises concern for further virus spread across the Americas by wild bird migration. One-Sentence Summary Detection of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza in Canada raises concern for spread in the Americas by migratory birds.

Beyond the effects of temperature increase on local population trends and on species distribution... more Beyond the effects of temperature increase on local population trends and on species distribution shifts, how populations of a given species are affected by climate change along a species range is still unclear. We tested whether and how species responses to climate change are related to the populations locations within the species thermal range. We compared the average 20 year growth rates of 62 terrestrial breeding birds in three European countries along the latitudinal gradient of the species ranges. After controlling for factors already reported to affect bird population trends (habitat specialization, migration distance and body mass), we found that populations breeding close to the species thermal maximum have lower growth rates than those in other parts of the thermal range, while those breeding close to the species thermal minimum have higher growth rates. In this study we use GPS satellite transmitters to compare spring migration of three populations of Barnacle Goose in space and time: the Russian, Svalbard and Greenland populations. Populations differed in their migration patterns and stopover use, which can be related to differences in routes, in particular whether they had to cross any large-scale barriers during migration (Tab. 1, Fig. 1). Within populations, however, migration patterns also differed remarkably between individuals, especially in the Svalbard and Russian populations, with some individuals even ‘skipping’ stopovers altogether and flying ‘directly’ to the breeding grounds (Fig. 2).
