The aim of this study was to determine the metal content (Hg, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and As) of muscle and liver in fish from the Skalka and Zelivka (control) reservoirs and to assess the capacity of metals to induce synthesis of metallothioneins in muscle, liver, and gill under natural conditions. The content of total mercury was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in muscle and liver from Skalka Reservoir than in samples from Zelivka Reservoir. Methylmercury represented the main form of total mercury in all muscle samples. Significant differences (p < 0.05) between tested sites were observed for copper, zinc, and arsenic. No significant differences were found in metallothionein content when comparing the localities. Metallothionein liver content was negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with total mercury at both reservoirs. The results indicated that metallothionein did not seem to be induced by high metal contamination, therefore the suitability of metallothioneins as a marker of c...

DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is the most common active ingredient in the insect repellents commonly detected in European groundwater. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of subchronic DEET exposure on biochemical and haematological parameters, antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S-transferase, and the amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). Two specific proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine genes were selected to assess an immunological status of the fish. Fish were exposed for 28 days to three concentrations of DEET (1.0 µg/L, 0.1 mg/L, and 1.0 mg/L) where 1 µg/L is corresponding to the concentration found in the environment. DEET had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on increased RBC, decreased mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin value (MCH) compared to control groups in the concentration of 1 mg/L. A sig...

The aim of the trial was to evaluate effects of high dietary levels of Se-enriched yeast on selenium concentrations in muscle and liver tissue and on the meat quality traits in rats. The experimental feed mixtures were fed to Wistar Albino rats for a period of 10 weeks. They differed in the dose and in the form of Se supplement. Supplemental dose of 0.3 mg.kg-1 of Se per one kilogram of feed was used in group I (n = 10, sodium selenite) and in group II (n = 10, Se-enriched yeast). Elevated dose 2 mg.kg-1 Se per one kilogram of feed was used in group III (n = 10, sodium selenite) and in group IV (n = 10, Se-enriched yeast). The use of elevated dietary Se level (2 mg.kg-1) in the form of sodium selenite did not increase lipid oxidation (malondialdehyde content) in muscles nor influenced meat quality traits. The use of elevated dietary Se level in the form of Se-enriched yeast resulted in higher Se muscle concentrations accompanied by increased of malondialdehyde content. The meat qual...
